Storing Summer Tires in a Non-Heated Garage
I live in an area that frequently has below freezing temperatures in the winter (at the very least).
I have a garage, but it isn't heated. If I store summer tires in my garage, will I run the risk of having them damaged when the temperature gets too cold? I know that they are not recommended for driving under a certain temp, but I'm not sure if that applies to storage as well. Thanks |

Spray the tires with Aerospace 303 and wipe them down. it will keep the tires from dry rotting stuff is amazing.

My Camaro has been stored outside the last two winters and I've had no issues with the summer tires come spring time.

Never had a problem storing in Michigan, which gets much colder than PA. You will be safe to park it and hang up the keys for a few months.

IIRC they state to not DRIVE or MOUNT when below freezing. The disclaimer I read stated that before MOUNTING tires that had been subjected to freezing temps to allow them to warm for 24 hours. Nothing about long term damage.

I've stored it for 2 years with no cracking and that's while it's still on the car too. As long as the tires aren't being used / driven on then it's good.

Hit 'em with a blowtorch like they do in the pits at NASCAR before every race

I stack mine in the garage next to an interior wall and throw a big moving blanket over them... they stay much warmer that way, and no issue for me living near Denver, CO... which isn't really that cold anyways.

The problem is the tire compound (or portions of it) can enter the glass phase at below freezing temps. The compound (or portions of it) can then crack or break if flexed or pressure is applied. The tires should be allowed to warm slowly (24+ hours) before mounting or use. Just storing them in the cold won't hurt them as long as they aren't moved until thawed.

I think that's what I'm doing this year. Hate carrying those things up and down my basement steps. My summer tires are about shot anyway.

eh i put my other set of goodyears in the corner of the dining room. with that being said, my detached garage isn’t heated. the car sat out there all last winter, tires were fine.

you have the factory tires. they will be fine being stored on the car in the winter just dont drive on them below 30 or so. if you have aftermarket ultra summer tires then you dont want to store most below 20deg. Ill be keeping my pilot super sports inside the house in the winter.

As others have said, you will probably be fine. If this garage is part of the house like mine (but not heated), it rarely gets below 40 even on the coldest days.
