If that is true, good. No need to have them out in the genral public for someone to get screwed.
Sad they are lost though, going to make the shitshow of getting one even worse.

They should have been disabled and sold for spares to people. What would have been wrong with recycling these parts in this manner?

Pretty sure it's a liability issue. Knowing the cars were damaged, if Chevy sold them and at some point one of the parts caused an accident, lawsuits would start. The cost of a single fatality could easily cost more than the write-off of destroying these cars. Happens all the time our society.
