this thread was so helpful for my install.. got her done last night and upon coming back from work today there was a grinding sound coming from the shifter and I got her up on jackstands in my garage. Turns out that the dust boot cover came loose. I cant inspect for damage as the entire exhaust system is 500 degrees but after she cools off a bit, I'm going to check to see if there was any damage.
Any tips on getting this PITA thing back on assuming its not mangled? Thanks UPDATE: The dust boot was intact but had some rub from the driveshaft and bits of rubber were thrown about the tub. I fooled around with it for 25 minutes and can get the drivers side tabs on and the rear passanger tab on, but there's not enough room to pull it on with my fingers to get the last tab on the housing. GF was yelling at me cause I was fiddling with the car and not her. I quit for the evening and am going to give it another go in the morning. Makes me want to take the entire damn thing off and be done with it but that would cause more harm than good. Last edited by full of days; 12-18-2009 at 05:32 PM. |

hehehe...yeah, that dust boot was a pain.
But, seems that if you do the passenger side first using the tabs and then working your way over, it'll go on. I messed with is a few times after it went on to make sure it would stay. |

TAG,
Thanks for an Amazing DIY bro! I seriously didnt even pull out the instructions from Hurst. Only issues I had was upon trying to install the flush allen head screws for the new shifter and I dropped one on the heat shield under drive shaft and took a nice little bit to retrieve it! Other than that everything went smooth as silk! Dust boot was a bit tricky, but once I fiddled with tabs working from corner to corner it went on pretty easy. Just NOT a lot of room under there when its up on jack stands. Great job!!! and thanks bro!!

You got it! Glad I could help. Yeah...not a lot of room at all. That drive shaft was ticking me off! |

One final trick I used was a locking hemostat clip (kind you find in a hospital!) to snag the final tab on the dust boot and slip over the retaining ring. My fingers and hands are just tooo big for that tight spot. |

Only thing that's shaking on my SS is the tag on the back-- from the Dynatech headers and MBRP exhaust system!! :-D

The rattle that comes with the shifter can easily be fixed with some foam type insulation or a 1/8th inch thick extra book that you can slip over the shifter (under all the stuff). The noise will be cancelled out and the vibration minimized.
I still have yet to get my hands on a Barton. I'd like to try one for myself. |
