Question Do you experience high cost of tires and gas at the track with your ZL1?

Hi Guys,
I was looking at the attached video on how an owner of a Shelby GT500 complains about excessive tire wear and excessive gasoline usage from his car at the track.

Do you experience the same situation with your ZL1 at the track?

Ours don't come with "special" Cup 2 tires.

I get just under 3 mpg in my 2019 ZLE A10. Around half a tank per 20 minute session.

I get four good days out of my F1 Eagle Supercar tires (with track camber/alignment) and rotating inside/outside.

What has been your experience?

The only 3 cars that I tracked were my '02 Porsche Carrera 911 and my '11 Mustang GT 5.0 w/. track package in both my gas tank lasted the full day just the outside of the tires had some wear. I tracked also my Corvette C7 Z51 AT but I wasn't able to do many laps because the rear overheated and had to abandon the track. I did not tracked neither my 5th gen ZL1 nor my 6th gen Camaro SS.
Just was thinking if I upgrade to a ZL1 or SS1LE which would be the best track toy that does not cost me too much on replacing wearables and gas?

The short: It's around a 4,000lb+ (gas+driver) car that you are driving quickly/fast on a road course. It's going to eat consumables a decent amount.

It all depends on the track, your setup, and how you drive. Some tracks are easier on different cars and consumables. If you are driving 10/10, you will be consuming even more. You can control/reduce these costs by making a few car changes, but you will only out weight the cost if you plan on tracking frequently.

consumables are about 1 gallon of fuel per lap, tires every 4-5 track days, and brake pads every 4-5. Fluid changes when necessary.

Be aware that some are getting even less time from new 3Rs. My last event I corded brand new front 3Rs after 2 days. I'm usually using about 1/3 tank on a 20 min session, and almost half a tank on 30 min sessions so for me it can be multiple trips to the gas station throughout each track day.

The upside is that it's a ton of fun on track and for me it has been fully capable with just a brake fluid upgrade. The last event was almost empty track all day long for 2 days so it was pretty aggressive driving all day, and I had no overheating issues or bad brake fade with the stock pads. Just a lot of rubber and gas missing at the end.

As a general rule, you'll go thru a set of tires every 2 or 3 days at the track. Too many variables are involved to be more precise.

At Sebring in my ZL1 1LE I would fill up after every session and there are 8 sessions in a weekend. I probably didnt need to but wasnt taking a chance on fuel starvation or cutting a session short because I was low on gas.

Tires can go quick or you can make them last depending on your driving, PSI, and aggression.

Wow. Sounds like the ZLE costs about 2x a SLE to run on track? ...and the SLE isn't exactly cheap.

Yeah, it's one of those factors I've been waffling on as far as ordering a ZLE, it's one of the most expensive cars to run in terms of consumables because of all the weight and power. It does seem like the difference is nearly double and that is a pretty big deal for my budget.

I wish Cayman GTS or GT4 were priced about 20% less but in the long run they may be a batter car to invest in. Maybe not ultimately quite as fast but not sure I care that much, they'll be more than fun enough.

Or get another SLE for half the price of the GTS. With Camaros going away even the SLE is likely to appreciate.

Now you know why Miatas and GR86s are so popular at the track.

Ehh.. I guess I just always took it as part of playing the game having a track car. I know I'll need new tires after 3x 4-20 min sessions. I know I'll need an oil change around the same time. I bring an extra 5 gals of gas just incase (gas light usually some on near the end of the 4th session).
