Custom spec cam thoughts

Well, I have finally started buying the parts I need slowly but surely for my cam swap in my 2015 L99 with 48k on it. I got a custom spec vvt cam by the best vvt cam company but haven't ordered it just yet.

What I wanted was little or no lope but more power everywhere and extended rpm range and getting rid of those horrid AFM lifters. I was told this cam should pull 10-15hp less then their stage 1 and idle near stock. Here are the specs.

216 228 dur. 629 612 lift 118lsa 104ICL and retarding the cam will extend well into the 6500+rpm. -14 overlap

I have already got in the underdrive pulley and ported tb in and I am awaiting the port and rod mod intake that will be here on Sunday.

Car already has full rear suspension, drag radials, 3200 stall,CAI,1 7/8 LT and tune and has run a 12.3. Based on what others have put down if the cam company is right that would be somewhere around 410-425rwhp before the intake, PTB and UDP. I am also thinking about getting my heads ported and polished and maybe milling them and bumping the compression closer to 11:1 or a little higher.

What do you guys think? The closest cam I can think of to this is a Lingenfelter Gt11 but this cam will be VVT and several guys back 5+ years ago put down 420rwhp on that cam alone and I am sure the VVT will only make it better. Thoughts?

I'm curious as well...I too am ready for a cam , but am unsure what to get , part of me wants to just get the gpi ss1 and the other half is thinking something with smaller lift that utilizes beehive springs for low mantinance.
Great thread , looking forward to responses

I think that cam is pretty tam but I think that's what your looking for correct? It should idle well especially with your torque converter.

Imo when it comes to "custom" cams if your not running a super odd ball build there's no need for one. So many shelf grinds available for the LS engine for so many different applications that one will do just fine for your set up.

Yep it fits the characteristics I want but I do have to admit I thought it would be a little more aggressive than that.

I was hoping for something like 218 230 118 with a similar lift or maybe 218 226 116 but there really aren't any factory off the shelf VVT cams that will do what I want. The only factory cam off the shelf that might work is the TSP VVT1 L92 cam 216 229 114 but that is a little more overlap then I want. Looking for something in the -10.5-12 overlap area with a 116-118 lobe separation is my guess from all the cams I have seen.

I could easily go with something like the tsp 2.2 or gpi ss2 vvt with my stall but that doesn't really provide the characteristics I am looking for. The cam company that spec. the cam said I would be leaving about 35rwhp on the table over their stage 2 vvt cam but it would lope hard for a daily.

So with a cam it'll be around 410-425whp....? Isn't that the avg power if not slightly higher with just LTs and a tune?

I think that with a l99 with LT's and a tune you'll get around 385 whp and with the ls3 you'll get around 405 whp.

Yeah you right.... I remember with my G8 it was around 430 with cam and FBO. 380ish sounds right now.

OP.. Send it. Put the biggest cam you can with that 3200 stall.

On my L99 we got 367 rwhp with the LT's and a tune on a mustang dyno.

No, 385rwhp is not common on an L99 with just headers, tune and CAI. Mine ran 12.6 with those mods on a street tire and dynoed 371rwhp. I added a stall and went 12.3 on street tires. I haven't run with the drag radials yet and assume it would get close to 12.0. I assume if I put the intake,PTB and underdrive pulley on I would be close to 385...ported heads might get you to 400 but you need a cam swap with our peanut cams to make that 420rwhp numbers.
My numbers put it right in line with what 1JEWLDSSRS said. The 2014-15 pick up like 3-5hp over the earlier models because the electric steering.

Do realize a tuned bolt on L99 that is stalled will put a hurt on a bolt on ls3 camaro ss. A 420rwhp L99 will likely beat a 450rwhp LS3 9 times out of 10 at the track.

I am sure the GPI ss2 vvt with, ported rod mod,PTB, under drive pulley and if I added ported heads would make it north of 460rwhp before porting the heads based on the numbers some guys have posted on this forum. I think DOC had the ss2vvt with shorty headers pulling 440rwhp. With this smaller cam and all the added goodies 440rwhp should be possible and that will put me solidly in the 11s for sure.

We will see. I am still getting some of the other parts. The last things I will order is the cam and heads.

Yea on the L99 rwhp on mine when we got the 367, I remember my tuner telling me that that was the biggest number he has seen on HIS dyno on a L99 with just LT's.. And a CAI.. And with the number I have now, 486rwhp, I'm still on stock heads with the LOD intake manifold and TSP Stage 3 cam..

I hit 425 on GPIs dyno. SS1 cam, stock heads, long tubes, and CAI.
