Cam question

Had this cam recommended. 228/234. 627/627. On 112 + 3. LS-3 with 17/8 headers, hi flow cats, Outlaw cat back, CAI, some suspension mods recently also. Don’t track the car and not a daily driver. Drive it 2-3 times a week. Looking for a bit more power and a nice rumble never hurts. Doubt I ever add SC. Stock gears, car pulls really hard in 1st and 2nd. When hitting 3 rd gear on full pedal it doesn’t have a lot. Maybe that’s normal but hoping a cam helps but maybe folks on here can input. Have a safe Labor Day to all

Stock gears? Get some 4.10s
I'd go with a stage 4 cam like the TSP F35

Depends on whether or not your manual or auto. Cause on that cam if your auto you're at the end of the spectrum for needing a converter. If your looking for something in the lines of those specs, then I would look at a TSP stage 3 or a GPI SS3.

It appears that in his sig, it’s a manual.

If you're just using the car for some good cruising along with a few good, hard therapeutic pulls I'd say get a cam that has similar specs to the GM crate 525 HP LS3. A duration of 226 in/236 ex, 110 LSA and a 525 lift that won't cause excessive valve spring stress. Do the LS2 timing chain damper and CHE trunion upgrade for reliability. Throw in some 3.91 gears (factory orig in Z/28 and 1LE) and you're ready to go. Oh, almost forgot. A good, reputable tuner to take full advantage of your new components!

I agree. I have the howards version of the asa cam except mine is on a 113 lsa, with PAC 1218 springs. This cam, while alot of people look down on it, does what I need it to do. Slightly choppy idle ( get compliments everywhere I go) Pulls pretty hard, yet drives like stock.

Thanks all for the input. I’ve been considering a gear change. I just want to make sure I get a compatible combo of gears and cam. I put 4:11 in my first car, 69 Cougar, and that made a massive difference. But I believe the stock gear were in the 2:70 range so it was a big difference. Going from 3:45 to 4:10 or 3:91 won’t be as drastic but definitely noticeable I’ve been told.

Any big/aggressive cam is gonna want gearing. I did a full N/A ls3 build and went with GM 3.91 gears. It was nasty for what it was. Not an extreme n/a build. But did 530whp. I am now running the same gears boosted.

Black SS-10 thanks for the post. I’m really liking the idea of gear change. And if I ever got a wild hair and went with a SC it sounds like I would be good to go with gearing. My car while it only has headers , CAI, pulls good, can’t imagine with gears and cam.

Gears will help these heavy cars move. But there is a tradeoff, as shifting more often, or with big power you run into traction issues. It was a fun NA setup with the gears. I am not sure if I will keep the 3.91 gears or go back to the 3.45 with boost. The taller gear will keep me in boost longer.
