You guys heard of the Hyperloop One? They did a full scale test and it hit 192mph in 5 seconds here in Nevada

Oh Oh...how about the drivers in the lane to the right of the HOV lane, that think they aren't in the FAST lane?

am i wrong about that...I mean the HOV doesn't count, it's a special lane that required HO, so if you are in the lane adjacent to it...GET OUT OF THE WAY YOU ARE IN THE FAST LANE!!!!

Earlier in July, Hyperloop One conducted another trial run of an “actual size” passenger pod, which managed to coast above the track for just over five seconds using magnetic levitation technology — better known as maglev — while reaching nearly 2 Gs of acceleration. That test hit a target speed of just 70 mph, though the successful run and subsequent trial means it can now move toward the next phase that will push the pod to a more exciting 250 mph.

I've been seeing the news clips on it in recent weeks, but hadn't seen the test ones.

0 to 192 in 5 seconds...PFFF...call me when they can do it in 4.

But wow, seriously - i have to imaging that won't be the standard acceleration rate with passengers on it...or will it?

pretty cool - wonder if it will pan out?

An engineering buddy of mine went on a (I kid you not) 2 hour long rant about how Hyperloop was pretty unfeasible in real world applications. I'll have to pick his brain now that they've done real world testing on it.

Would be interesting to know why he feels that way. only issue I can see is going too fast, too fast. lol but if people can handle taking off in an airplane that goes 200mph, then this could work.

I guess turns could be a problem at 600mph lmao

I'd agree with him. I don't know what exactly he said, but I bet I still agree.

As I understand the concept its basically a subway-sized vacuum chamber. Stick a can inside it, then put people into the can. Drive the can with electric motors. Please note that this vacuum chamber will be many times bigger than the worlds current largest.

Right off the bat, you have build costs that will be at least a couple times more than that for traditional subway line along a similar route. And probably more than a similar maglev train too. That makes it unfeasible. Not impossible to do, just highly impractical.

But assuming unlimited money to pay for it, you also have the issue of stations. For safety, a station will need to be on some sort of siding from the main line. This will be very tricky to pull off given the nature of the 'rails' that guide a hyperloop pod. Not impossible, but not trivial either.

Another issue is that the hyperloop would face some pretty big problems with thermal expansion/contraction. As things get warmer, they get bigger. A 300 mile long tube would need hundreds of feet of expansion joints so that it doesn't buckle. Since its also a vacuum chamber, these expansion joints would need to be air tight as well as flush mounted. Each one of these complicated expansion joints would be a potential point of failure for the system as a whole.

Then there is safety. The system is not fail safe. As in, if things go wrong can it be brought back into state of being safe. With a high speed derailment or something thats obviously out of the question. In that case, nearly everyone will die instantly with the remainder being horribly wounded. But something as simple as pod depressurization would be catastrophic. In an airplane, another positive pressure people can, if it looses pressurization it can descend to lower altitude where the air is less hostile to human life. When a hyperloop pod ruptures, you're going to have to rely on that air mask until help arrives. Or the can open up the entire system to the atmosphere and flood it with air. Also, going back to airplanes, if it experiences a power failure it will turn into a very big glider. A hovering can inside a tube travelling at ~500 mph will descend for a fraction of a second in the event of a power failure and almost assuredly tear itself to pieces just as quickly.

Simple fact is, if it were as cheap and easy as Mr Musk claims it is ... it would have become the standard decades ago when others have the idea of vacuum trains. There are much better ways to spend 100 billion dollars than on a hyperloop.
