99% of our customers that buy it will NEVER need to know any of this.
That's why it's so complicated. Salesmen/women are instructed to tell customers that they cannot open the hood. There are no user serviceable items in there anyway. Basically it's BMW telling customers to stay out.

All that wonderful German over engineering. Amazing machines, until they need to be fixed.

And as for the battery - again - scan tools. The new battery has to be registered with the car. So yeah, you would be going to the dealer for those.

#1: It's easily one of the most complex cars on the road right now.
#2: It's German. They don't expect you to be able to service it yourself and to be honest, they don't want you to. More money for the dealer.

I've work as an engineer for a German heavy equipment manufacture for 20 years and spend a lot of time at the main offices in Germany. I alway tell them that "if its needlessly complicated and inefficient, its German." Even with office procedures and data sharing, the tendency is to control what you can do and how you do it.
Having said the above... They are amazing engineers and each person takes his roll very seriously.

If money was no object, I would have ZERO interest in buying the i8. I think it's one of the most hideous looking cars available today. It looks like a 10 year old designed it. I also hate the idea of hybrid sports cars/supercars. The batteries/electronic components in hybrid cars add unnecessary weight and complexity. Car manufacturers who are serious about building a supercar should just stick with improving the internal combustion engine (including turbo technology).
The BS shown in that video is just icing on why I would never consider getting the i8. People say there's no reason to ever open that hood....but...I'm a detail freak with my cars. I'd eventually have to open the hood just to detail it and wipe down all the dust. It would be asinine if I had to go through all that just so I can detail under the hood.

BMW does some amazing things. But please be aware that the message that this car gives me is this:
"BMW wants drivers that are passionate about the driving experience and who are also completely uninterested in their own cars" That is quite a contradictory message.
