Starter heat soak

Just got my motor back it’s a 427 dart iron block so it runs a bit hotter than stock. Need recommendations on a good starter that won’t heat soak. Having issues with frequent hot starts. Letting it cool down a bit it will start.

Not sure if you saw this or not. I had to install two in my Camaro, the one in the trunk and one from the bell housing to the body. Took care of the problem.

Damn two? Hmmm might try that, just had a thought that radiant heat wrap might help gonna try that first and see how it goes.

Yep, two... When I did just the one in the trunk, it helped the cold start work better, but didn't do much for the hot start issue, it was still there, so I did the second one and bam, no more issue. I also wrapped my starter with a DEI starter wrap I got from Summit Racing.

How old is the current starter? I replaced mine this year without any other changes like grounds or new battery or cables and it now spins like new. Mine was a 13 camaro with 64k mikes.

My original lasted 7 years before it crapped out. Bought another one from Summit Racing and it only lasted 4 years. I think it might have been a reman unit, I didn't pay attention when I bought it. Just replaced it with a new OEM one from my Chevy dealership, and with the 2 new ground cables she starts up way better than when the car was brand new!! Even hot!! Instead of it going rer rer rer zoom, it goes rer zoom!! Even hot.. The starter when the car was brand new NEVER did that, ever. People used to ask me why it stars so slow, and I would tell them, that's how it is. Little did I know about the grounding back then!

I never had a moment's issue with starting, till I built my 416ci stroker ,and it immediately did what yours is doing . As soon as it got to operating temp would crank real slow and not start till cooled off. I read another guy's post ,don't remember who ,that said its not heat soak at all its the ground points not having the paint removed .
When I pulled the negative ground in the trunk I found just what he said the only thing grounding was the threads of the bolt ,and they always get oxidation and start to loose ground. So I ground the paint off down to bare metal and reconnected and sprayed some corrosion X on it . I did this to all of my ground points and added a new ground from my engine block to the frame and never had a problem since.

Hope this helps! Ps I'm still running the original starter with 170,000 miles on it.

Now that you mentioned this, I remember seeing that thread as well, and when I did my trunk cable, forgot to look at that and fix it. I just added the secondary ground to it. I'll have to pull it this weekend and sand it down. We did sand the area on the body where the bell housing one went to. Thanks for the reminder!
