That is exactly how your oil gets dirty. Particles get through the air filter and past the piston rings. Do some reading on this and you will see. Why else do they tell you to change more frequently if you are in a dusty environment?

I have always been told 5,000 miles is perfectly fine on a car that runs well with no problems. If it is a car that needs a little TLC often, you should probably change oil at 3,000.

I do every 5k in my Jeep, but when I had my G8 GT it was every 12k...but it held 8.75 quarts.

I've worked with the engineer who supported IT at Mobil-1's research center, where they developed Mobil-1. He asked them questions all the time, they loved that he was a carbuff. The tests they ran showed that even after 10,000 miles the viscosity in Mobil-1 was close to original. Not so with non-syn oil, not even close. Of course, the oil still gets dirty so you need to change the filter to at least remove grit. They said acids are better "controlled" with Mobil-1, though I'm unsure what that meant - assumed somehow that Mobil-1 didn't go as acidic, or as quickly, as non-syn oils.
Anyway, because of this feedback I had started to just change my filter at 3k and full load at 9k. I did this on 4 different cars, 2 Toyota MR2's (which I constantly shifted at redline) and 2 different turbocharged Volvo's, one I sold with 285k miles, the other with 225k. "No oil related issues ever", but does that mean there would never be? Dunno...but these cars did not have an easy life, trust me. |

12.6 litre Detroit diesel holds 10 gallons of dino oil, company changes filter ~15,000 miles and complete oil change ~30,000 miles. It now has 570,000 miles, still runs strong and has never used a gallon of oil between changes. Impressive...

I'd say it all depends on how you drive and where you live as well ... Oil changes are pretty cheap insurance but I'd go for every 5k with full synthetic ... This is what Ford recommends ..

The problem I see with this very long "recommended" miles and intervals is the marketing aspect. I think its worse with these, than with the 3K recommendation.
Take a close look at the first post, which defines "severe". Once a week in stop and go? Idleing? Short trips? Over 90 degrees outside? This is considered "severe"? I don't know about you guys, but a lot of it sounds pretty "normal" to me. If not experiencing any of these "severe" conditions is nescessary for the oil to get its maximum "life", sounds like pie-in-the sky to me. I think the 3K guys still have it right. Where you run into trouble is when you go an extended peroid without an oil change and you have failed to check the oil level. You get down a few quarts (or more) and the remaining oil overheats and breaks down, or worse you loose oil pressure because there is not enough in the pan.

Dumping full synthetic @ 3000 is a waste. Do an extended service and have an oil analysis done, THAT'S cheap insurance and very informative.
I would reduce interval on a modified engine, the more it's modded, the lower the interval. Quote:

This. Changing every 3K miles is worthwhile insurance the same way it would be worth it to buy insurance against your house being destroyed by a dinosaur. |

VW`s and porsche`s will have had the sump changed out nearly twice by 10,000 miles just by adding a gallon every 1000 miles

Hmm, seems like a very generalized opinion. Some engines SHOULD have the oil changed at 3k. My m1 5w30 is sheered to hell after 3k.
