Buying used and A8 advice

Hello and first post! Previously was on Camaro 5.

I’m looking at buying a 16-18 SS. (Previously had a 2010 SS, auto.) I’ve gathered there was an issue in at least the 2016 year with the A8 transmission. Was the problem limited to only that year of production? I’m not against buying a M6, in fact I may prefer it, it’s just that are so many more available if I don’t limit myself to a manual. What do I need to know about this A8 transmission before buying one? I know GM put out a fix for it for the 2016 cars. How would I know if this was done? How does everybody like there Autos?

Any advice or thoughts and information appreciated. I can’t wait to get back into a Camaro!

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. The A8 shudder wasn’t limited to a specific year Camaro. Actually, the A8 trans shudder can happen in a lot of the GM platforms.

This article can get you up to speed with your request for information.

I like the manual trans..... it shifts nice..... no shudder.

Plug in a 15 dollar skip shift eliminator and everything is golden.

I can't recommend the A8. Seems like it just becomes a bigger headache as time goes on. I traded mine in and went back to a M6.

If we put the whole shudder issue to the side, the A8 is a smooth unit. Thankfully, I was able to get the flush done before I had any symptoms of the shudder (As I drove in manual mode most of the time). So far, I’ve been hearing positive response from the latest fix but nobody knows for sure if this is just a bandaid or a legit fix. If I were you, I’d advise getting the M6 on the 16-18 cars, or even get the A10 in the 19-20!

Welcome to the forum! The A8 is the faster trans but the M6 is infinitely more fun and engaging. My suggestion is if you plan on driving it through the year, get an automatic for the remote start. If it's warm weather only, I'd personally wait for the right manual to come along.

Either buy an M6 or a 2019-2020 A10.

If your tuning just zero out the slip%'s on the A8 and you'll never run into the problem. If your buying it used ask to have it flushed and properly inspected for TC damage before you will sign anything.

This.

Of course everyone who's ever had an issue with the A8 and notices this thread will be posting here. GM dropped the ball on this one big time indeed, but there is a solution that has worked so far (new 2019 flush + potentially new TC), plus with a tune the A8 trans is actually preeetty good. For those that prefer the 2016-2018 look and feel, this is a very viable option IMO.

The A8 with a tune is a beast of a transmission, even stock it handles torque better than the A10. I haven't had that shudder when it goes V4, I have a 2018 built in January, I daily mine.
