Cam for track use, worth it?

Any of you guys tracking a cam'ed car?

Dos and donts, drawbacks, advise?

How did you pick your cam?

Was it worth it?

Im like 80 days into the car and in an expanded passing group. I mostly drive with my local PCA chapter, and like to be a bit more competitive with GT3s and Cup cars when i make the transition to the instructor group.

You don't have to compete in the instructor group. Should be about having fun with your friends. But if you want to be Competitive with 911 GT3, then you'll need the SC3R tires too.

Re Cam advice... any road course guy will tell you to move the power upward to a higher RPM so the LT-1 doesn't fall on it's face at 6k.

I used to track my stage 2 cammed 5th gen and it works great as the power is at the higher RPMs but one thing to note is that your oil temperatures will be higher so plan accordingly.

It is about having fun with my friends, I want to be able to keep pace for a few laps and not just a few corners. I do pretty well with the GT cars in the corners, but i just get dusted anywhere the wheels are straight with them having 60 more HP and weighting 400lbs less.

Having the added RPM is nice.

I suggest getting in contact with your favorite cam supplier and have them spec you a custom cam. Custom cams are alot cheaper than people think.

I use Gwatney Performance.

Those GT3s and those cup cars are insanely quick and they are really capable of putting their power down early out of corners.

Adding a cam and high rpm power will definitely help you keep up, but also makes it a little more tricky to get out of the corner.

If they're quicker to full throttle they'll still pull away on the straight. Sticky tires will be huge, and an adjustable suspension will help you make use of that new power.

I went through this with my SLE and figured I would need at least 550 wheel to even be near a GT3 on acceleration. I decided to go with a ZLE and even it is a struggle against a well driven GT3 off the corners.

I was thinking this as well.

The SLE punches way above it's weight, but trying to get a $50K car to keep pace with at $250K car is a little like bringing a knife (or at best a sword) to gun fight. Sure, you can boost the power of the LT1 and put in in the ballpark of the LT4, but at what risk to reliability? You are, after all, talking about repeatedly wringing it out on the track.

How do you consider anything but katech h/c + msd for this application?

Maybe BTR too but why.

Racerboy Nick runs a cam in his SS and he's a couple seconds faster than I am in the ZLE. His car is hella stripped down to the metal tho., and he runs ZLE suspension.

There's no keeping up with a well driven GT3. I hate to admit it but it's the unfortunate truth. Our cars would need to be stripped all the way down to 3,200lbs to even have a shot. They simply get thru Chicanes faster and uphill corners as well.

The only way we're beating them is on a billard smooth track with no chicanes, and no uphill sections.

At The Ridge, my best lap times are within 1 sec of the best production 992 GT3 laptimes with a proper driver. That said, I'm on upper end of my limit and they are on the bottom.

Thanks for adding those insights.... and if we're being truthful, you're likely one of the best drivers on this forum which says a lot.

Those GT3 are serious through the corners. It makes me sick to my stomach watching them pull away exiting turns.

If I clipped footage from all my vids of GT3s walking away from me on corner exits it'd probably get 1MM views.

I’d be happy just to be more competitive on track with the Mack 1s, GT350s, DHs, M2/3/4s…in other words..cars that are generally considered in the same universe as my SS. Forgetabout GT3s. A cam and supporting mods would definitely allow a SS to be more competitive with those cars.

Never driven with a GT350, but Ive not had a problem keeping up with or putting behind me most M cars/GT4s/996 GT3/non GT 991s Ive encountered.
