Headliner replacement?!

I did a search on the forum and found limited information.

When is it noticeable that the headliner needs replacement? Is it when you first buy the car or after it is driven for a while?

Also did I read correctly that the windshield has to be replaced if a headliner is indeed needed?

I'm looking into buying a new ZL1 and if that's the case I really don't want to mess with it at this point. Hopefully GM will get their stuff together with later build quality.

When purchasing my 17 a week ago or so I discovered that 1 out of 5 headliners fit as intended based on the vehicles I looked at. The issue was at the front at the corners. There's a section of the headliner at these places which is thicker than in the middle. At the front the headliner is supposed to curve up towards the roof at approx 90 degrees or so. Only one headliner had this curvature and was tight where it met the windshield . The others all continued straight, displaying a frayed edge. They all also varied in looseness. One of the headliners had enough gap for me to fit my hand between it and the roof.

I talked with the service manager about it and he said that there's nothing holding the headliner in the front and the fit was based on the form of the headliner itself and how it fits into the "A" posts. So basically they fit how they fit from the factory.

He highly advised me to let it be as mine was tight to the roof but just lacked the correct curvature. He printed out the instructions for replacement which included removal of both windshields and in my case a lot of messing with the sunroof. I chose to just let it be as no one else would probably notice it.

I may be wrong but I thought the front corners were also curved to accommodate the side airbag. Mine is visible but not overtly obvious, still after a year I do want to find something to either cover it or hold it up.

Oh crap!

I never realized there were so much problems with the headliner. I am having my car in for service and I am having them look at mine for a rattle (can hear it on any non-smooth / new pavement). Hopefully they can just get whatever little clip is rattling to shut up without the bigger maintenance project.

Thank you for the info.

Sad that a $70,000 dollar car has these issues.

my headliner is a little loose in the rear passenger side by the rear window glass.

I just purchased a couple new retaining clips and plan on popping the old one out over there and throwing in the new one.

I assume they're the cheapy single use type that destroy themselves when you remove them and bumps etc just caused one or two rows of the plastic to bend on the original clip leading to this looseness. No big deal.

There was no clip under the front of my headliner. It was rattling/ chirping like crazy until they fixed it.

Have you ever seen a lose dress on a Fat woman? There is your answer..

When their lean and low weight you always have that chance the dress may fit a little lose

By the way no issue with mine so far

Top left/right corners. Mine don't have much gap but as you can see the edge is straight exposing the frayed edge as opposed to tucked back up to the roof.
