Pick up truck questions/opinions

What year did GM start the cylinder deactivation crap on the Silverado/Sierra? I’m thinking about a Sierra 2500 with the 6.2L and I know the newer ones have the new anywhere to 1-7 shutdown. Hell no. I have to say I really like the F-250 a lot. Do they have anything stupid like that on their gas motors? I know to stay away from the 5.4L.

Thanks.

I have a 2016 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3L and it has it. I think all the motors had it starting in 2014. But that might just be 1500s. Don't think 2500s have AFM.

Thank you Mark. I’m looking for something to tow about 7500 to 8000 pounds which I know the 5.3 can handle but I really like the 6.2 and a 2500.

Look for a 2500HD with an iron 6.0 liter - no AFM, basically bulletproof as long as you keep oil and coolant in it.

An L92 or LH9 truck will be a 6.2 liter with VVT, but no AFM. VVT is awesome, doesn't have problems, broadens the power band substantially.

I was looking for a 6.0 2500 when I stumbled onto this baby. '01 2500 HD, Allison 5-speed and a torque monster 8.1L big-block! No touch screens, heated seats or other candy-ass crap that doesn't belong in a truck. And it only has 66K miles. This should tow my Z/28 or Z06 with ease. Don't be afraid to jump into something a bit older, good advice for trucks AND women!

Check out the half ton diesel trucks. They have excellent towing capability, ride better than a 3/4 or 1 ton, and get great mileage. My F150 diesel got 18 mpg towing my Camaro and regularly gets 27 mpg highway.

A note of caution if you decide to go the half-ton route be sure to do your research on Gross Vehicle Weight and towing capacity. Just because a truck CAN tow, say 12,000 lbs or so doesn't mean it can do it SAFELY. There are actually laws that pertain to this subject and if you're involved in an accident with an overloaded rig YOU may be at fault. I decided to go a bit overkill for future expansion with the 2500HD as my '94 1/2 ton damn near made me s#!t my pants one time during a freeway panic stop.

This is sound advice - weight and wheelbase are your friends when towing, especially bumper towing. I've towed with a bunch of stuff over the years, but my trusty old Dodge is the here for life!

That’s kind of why I was thinking 2500HD with the 6.2L but I really really don’t want AFM. The 6.0L might be the answer although the 8.1L sounds amazing. Lol

A 2500HD would have a 6.0, or the newer ones have 6.6 gas motors.
