What do you do if no one has a charging station waiting just for you to plug into. How green is it to run out of juice and have to call a flatbed truck that gets 8 mpg burning diesel to tow you home?
But the majority of people drive less than 50 miles per day, and most electric cars I've heard of have ranges in excess of 100 miles. So situations like what you describe will be exceedingly rare.

We went the route of bringing in marketing and sales geniuses from Proctor adn Gamble, etc. Didn't quite work out so well. Selling computers and ipods doesn't automatically make for a good car guy.

Besides our CFO is from Microsoft and from what I've seen, he "gets it".

Apple = a small niche of overpriced 'fancy' computers. Or, if you prefer: Phones that are no longer revolutionary and are hindered by their network. I don't want that image associated with GM, sorry.

This is exactly right. The EV is more comparable to an electronic device than it is a motor vehicle. While they both perform the same task, they are handled in separate ways.

It's like creating a marketing strategy for mp3 players when the market was saturated by Portable CD-Players.

He was brought in to 'revolutionize the buying experience' not for electronics engineering. That said, Tesla and Apple do fit together pretty well. You can get better, cheaper products elsewhere but those other manufacturers don't have the tech geeks swooning over them like Apple and Tesla have.
