Thats another thing I beleive is BS is the GOVT does tax the hell out of gas. Dont know the exact numbers but when gas was 4 bucks, the govt was taking like 1.50 of that. Thats wrong.

Let's not turn this into a Dems' vs. Reps' debate. Keep it clean or it'll be shut down.

Respectfully...

The Federal Gas tax is 18.4 cents the rest is up to your state and local governments. The federal tax does not change with gas prices. Texas has a 20 cent per gallon tax so Texas taxes gas more than the federal government.

When did we start talking about emissions?

CAFE divides a manufacturers' products into three lines: Domestic cars, foreign cars (or cars with lots of foreign parts), and trucks.
From http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CARS/rules/CAFE/overview.htm
"For passenger cars, a vehicle, irrespective of who makes it, is considered as part of the “domestic fleet” if 75% or more of the cost of the content is either U.S. or Canadian in origin. If not, it is considered an import."

According to http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CARS/rules/CAFE/overview.htm
"The penalty for failing to meet CAFE standards recently increased from $5.00 to $5.50 per tenth of a mile per gallon for each tenth under the target value times the total volume of those vehicles manufactured for a given model year.

Since 1983, manufacturers have paid more than $500 million in civil penalties. Most European manufacturers regularly pay CAFE civil penalties ranging from less than $1 million to more than $20 million annually. Asian and domestic manufacturers have never paid a civil penalty."
Sorry to be clear,

I meant to say that the new standard can't be reached by a car company now. Meaning they all have work to do to get there but GM is further along then most.

Nice post BTW.

True but 18.4 cents per gallon, so on two gallons its 36 cents, on four its 72 cents. Plus add in states you can see the 1.50 per gallon going to govt, shoot the feds alone almost taking quarter.

I'm going to make a prediction:

We all know that as of this moment, GM has more hybrids than anyone else and more 30MPH cars than anyone else. This was true yesterday, correct?

Now that the administration has laid down this new mandate, how long do you think it's going to be before they credit themselves with getting GM to stop making all those wasteful SUVs that nobody wants and now they make efficient hybrids and electric cars thanks to the wonderful leadership and these mandates.

I guarantee you they will try and usurp credit for the technology GM has been working on all these years and probably the advances in quality they have made too.

Mark my words!

The people in washington (of all parties) will latch on and go for a free ride!

California strives to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to environmental standards.

The Los Angeles Basin has some of the most polluted air in the country from smog.... because Los Angeles is the least windy city in the US.

But there will always be sports cars and heavy duty trucks. Look at the 3.6L v6... how much horse power and the mileage it gets. GM is moving in the right direction. The Obama administration just wants to push our car companies even harder in this very same direction.

California doesn't represent the entire country. The constitution is in place so that no single organization can dictate to the rest of the country. States have thier own legislature for a reason. Nothing in our government give a state to establish federal policy or standards.

Having said that. If the president choses to use the policy of a state as the federal policy then I better get to my confressman and senators and tell them that I disagree. I know CA didn't make this decision but I don't like that the current administration isn't considering what the rest of us want.

I know my sig is anti cafe. Maybe I'll change that. I do believe in the long run it can be a good thing. It seems to me we are cutting off the big three while claiming to be helping them survive. It seems like CAFE and Federal loans are pulling the big three in different directions. CAFE is costly and restrictive and we are throwing money at them to stay alive... Hard for me to grasp right now.

We need to put together a V8 / Diesel convoy through/around DC. Go SLOW. Fast enough to avoid a ticket, but slow enough to GRIDLOCK DC! Add signs on the vehicles protesting govt. FORCING manufacturers to make what govt. wants, not what Americans want. SHUT DOWN TRAFFIC in DC!

Mabe these new Federal policies are being modeled after California because of California's high standards?

I don't know about you, but I have to 'smog' my 33 year old truck every year or two, and if it doesn't pass I can't register it and it becomes illegal to drive it on public roads.

So you think that people who live out in the boonies should be able to drive their gross polluters that get 3mpg because their states have a lower poulation?

To the Obama administration, it's a 'global' issue, and California is leading by example.

Are you opposed to driving a car that gets 50mpg? Now it's GM's job to make a high mileage vehicle that people will want to buy, or they can just leave it up to Japan and Korea.

It sucks having to live by all these strict rules in California.... but we do it just fine, so why can't you?

Part of your post I agree with, but part of it I don't. California doesn't 'do it just fine'. California lead the way into the current recession. California has been losing industrial base at a rate well above the national average for years. California would be losing population base if not for immigration. California is suffering a 'brain drain' where their educated and affluent are tending to move toward other states.

California also did itself disservices by being the poster child for urban sprawl. The California Lifestyle model for urban infrastructure was copied often in the west and that's part of why we are where we are now with this crap. Look it up if you don't believe me.
