First off i would say that most people roll down the windows first because the AC blasts hot air if you turn it on right away. A single volcanic eruption causes more heat and pollution than all the cars in the US do, why doesn't California put a ban on those too.

This is the kind of crap that happens when you put people in control of governments that think bigger government is better government. California is bankrupt and they stil don't get it. If we don't get serious about combating this crap, it is just a matter of time before it spreads nationwide.
You're dead on! This is my last post of the night, becuase I don't even know where to begin! Guys, the land here is fantastic, but the people who run the show in California are WORTHLESS...and the folks who vote them into power are nothing more than sheep that need to be lead around because they can't think for themselves. Either the bulk of these people truly are stupid, (which they are) and / or there really is something to be said for all those conspiracy theorists, because logic plays no part in their actions!

Guys, be afraid, becuase California leads the way for the rest of the country. It always happens here first, then trickles throughout the rest of the U.S.! Futhermore, when you combine California's state government with the federal government...forget it, I'm laughing too hard now. Good night....

Well kind of off-topic, have you seen that commercial for the new Mac laptop and it's long life battery reducing the number of batteries that end up in land-fills? Every time I see it I think "Wow, they're worried about one little battery, do you suppose they ever give a thought to the ~180 lbs of batteries in their Priuses when they need replacing?"

Another side note. Had a bunch of protesters, forget the name of their group, in downtown Indy the other day protesting that ANY movie that shows a person smoking a cigarette should have to have a "R" rating! Yeah, like that's the only place in the world an under 21 person is going to see someone smoking. Of all the problems in the world today I couldn't help but think couldn't they focus their efforts on something more productive?

Actually... as a Canadian, I think California is one of your cooler states...

Arnie has the right ideas. He wants to clean up the air by lowering emissions and making tougher smog requirements on cars in Cali.

I have been to L.A. a few times and am really stunned by the smog in the air that you see flying in. It's really sad and makes me wonder about the future of the planet. There are no cities with air that dirty in Canada. Vancouver doesn't even come close (and that is one dirty stinky city!)

Now before you flame me, I don't really think I am a hypocrite for caring about the environment AND buying a V8 at the same time. I think there is room for modern muscle cars and clean air. I recycle, I never litter, use Energy Star compliant everything. I ride my bike to work when I can (or work from home most of the time anyway), and plan to purchase a Chevy Volt AND maybe a Tesla Motors car when they become available (both plug-in electric cars - none of that BS Hybrid crap).

California people are nice for the most part, and let's face it, Pot NEEDS to be legalized already, and it looks like Arnie is making some good steps towards making that a reality too..

Yay, Kali!

that said this is stupid, but there are easy ways around this. the loophole in this is that it only has to reflect X amount of light, it doesn't say visible light and the light spectrum is um.. pretty Fing big. So get a shiny car that reflects and problem solved.

Finally can we please stop saying this is liberals or conservatives on this board as a sterotype. Not everyone that is conservative is a redneck and not everyone that is a liberal is a hippie, in fact only a small percentage of either side is really off their rockers and thats who you hear about the most.

I think political blurbs don't belong on this site!

Wanna know a secret? Most of the cars in California causing the massive amounts of smog aren't newer cars. The problem is the climate is so good on cars they run for a long time. People still drive El Caminos in Cali...and I'm not talking show cars. I'm talking beaters.

If you seriously want to make a dent in the pollution there, what you have to do is make cars MORE AFFORDABLE for people with lower incomes so they can buy new, instead of raising the cost of cars by imposing these massively stupid rules and saftey regulations.

It's great that California wants to reduce smog in the atmosphere, but that's not what the problem is. The problem is that quite a few people in California seem to want to go about it in the most asinine way possible. California in particular is known for passing ridiculous legislation that is ineffective at best (like that which spawned this thread) and blatantly unconstitutional at the worst (the extreme to which Kali takes gun control).

The main problem is that idiot politicians are throwing all kinds of ridiculous legislation out there to save the environment instead of trying to think of logical measures that might actually work.

Bingo. All the older cars that people are still driving in Kali have none of the emissions technology that the cars produced in the last decade do. I read in an article that smog in LA should actually be reduced by 75% by 2030 simply because people will have gotten newer vehicles by that point.
