WOW.. And I wonder why car salesman get such a bad rap sometimes. A customer came in last night and while doing the trade appraisel we guaged her car and it showed the entire passenger side had been repainted. (Paint gauge uses a magnet to measure the thickness of the paint) The customer was unaware of this when she bought the vehicle, and called the selling dealer (our competition) to ask WTF was up. The sales person told her, that the paint gauge does not work on the BMW because it is a different paint, plus to keep in mind that we are using a US paint gauger, and the BMW is a foreign car, and overseas, they use the METRIC SYSTEM, so the US paint gaugers are inaccurate.

All Paint Gaugers measure in Milimeters.

Eh, just take it on the chin for now--it'll blow over. It's not like you went out and bought the car without telling them. Marshal law until you get out from under their roof unfortunately.

There's a difference, though. When your dealership sells a used car, it does a few things. It makes a profit large enough to feed someone's family, so the buyer has different, higher expectations. For instance, they expect that your mechanics will back that it is reliable. I took this buyer to En-Tire Car Care, the local guys who did my brake work. I told them to tell her anything she wanted to know about the car. They said it is in great shape and that they had fun with the AWD. Normally, a private sale is ambiguous, but I provided all sorts of documentation. Even if I hate the thing, I've been good at taking care of it, and documentation proves it. When you sell a car, you have a reputation behind you, in addition to a VIN report if they want to get one. You clean it and make it presentable. You're professionally selling cars, so the expectation is higher. She said my car was unprofessional in that it was not shiny and clean. I'm not a professional. Anyway, I wished her luck dealing with a worse car for a higher price. I hope it breaks right after she buys it.
