Well, going out "in style" is not going to happen for me. I was looking to be in one more powerlifting event this April and then hang up my 'competition' gloves. But somewhere along the way, I have aggrevated a disc in my lower back training and when I go to lift heavy, it really lets me know it. After giving it some rest last week (no training), I was planning to deadlift this Sunday and make my final decision. If I could deadlift about 80% of my normal weights, I would probably attempt it. But after pulling 135 lbs, and the pain was so intense, I got to see all the pretty flashing stars, I needed to sit down.

It is very depressing, as I really wanted to go out by hitting a new PR in one of the three lifts. But I know it's not worth injuring myself more. I will continue to train, and train others. It just sucks, as this is something I truly enjoy doing, pushing myself and competing with my friends.

Awe that stinks babe. I can understand wanted to finish what you started, but youre right its not worth making your injury worse, and your back isn't something to mess with! Hopefully it heals soon.

Gah............... Dude. That REALLY does suck.

When the orthapedic doctor told me I just flat out can't lift heavy weight any more (I was only 28 years old) it was soooooo depressing.

I can't imagine being as attached to it as you for so long to come to this point.

Really sorry to hear, but, hey, you still have your great health. And your car.

thanks. My back is feeling good 'now', but I know I will no longer be pulling 600+ lbs. I can still bench 445 lbs and it doesn't bother me. So I will still get to do what I really really enjoy, hitting the gym, just not to the extent of hitting any new PR's. I have had some serious back injuries, and I know all to well that I do NOT want to be in that situation again. I overcame those injuries with dedication, determination and a will to prove what I can do. My Nike shirt should say "Yeah, I did it, now it's your turn".

I am still thrilled to train and help any and all that want to learn "how to do it right".

Sorry you did not get to "go out" the way you had planned, but you are far from "out". Just wait til' you are one of us geezers on the Ol' farts thread. LOL Glad to hear you have a good attitude about it. Hang in there. You'll be back!

You go girl!

Okay now I need my nutritionistas. It seems there are good odds I may be gluten intollerant. Both of my sisters & some of their kids are now Dx with it. Based on symptoms review, very likely my mother was as well. I don't want it to be true but I am told it tends to run in families espacially passed from mothers to daughters. Early experiments in eliminating & adding back in gluten lends some validity to the possibility for me. I have been doing some on-line research & have found some good food options. I don't want this to cause me to get off track. Any thoughts, recommendations, or guidance would be appreciated.

First off. Go to the doctor and find out if you are or not. They can give you lists of things you can and can't eat and give you a better idea of what to incorporate into your diet.

Now based on what I know from my sister, the nutritionist, this may even help your weight loss simply because you'll be cutting out alot of carbs if you are in fact GI. Having GI almost forces you to eat a Paleo type diet. A simple natural diet is your best option with a lot of fruits and veggies since you won't get much fiber from alternative grains. If you have GI you have to be very dilligent, gluten is in alot fo things I'm sure you know. If it says malt it has gluten in it. Most condiments have gluten, and most processed foods. So lots of fruits and veggies. And alternatives if you want pasta or bread but they will be simple carbs normally and low in fiber and not to mention not very tasty. In the weight department having GI can be a sort of blessing but it will indeed make life difficult.

Hope that helps girlfriend!

Can I join the club, too?

After a bad motorcycle wreck in 9/09 I ballooned to 310 lbs. I visited San Francisco in March of 2011 and took alot of pictures. It looked like I was smuggling a basketball under my shirt. Plus, walking the hills just about gave me a coronary. I knew something must be done.

I gradually tapered off the junk food and stopped drinking a case of beer every Saturday. On January 4th, 2012 I weighed 290 lbs. Good, but not great. After abnormal blood glucose results I decided to ramp it up.

I swapped carbs for protein and cut my caloric intake in half of the maintenance value. I make 2 protein smoothies everyday and have a low carb 550 calorie lunch. At first I was always hungry. Now, I am used to it.

Today, I weigh 263 lbs. That equates to a total of 47 lbs I have lost in approx 1 year. My initial goal was to reach 270 but that seemed to come too easy. I'm ready for 240 now.

I did this without a lick of cardio - Strictly changing what I put into my body.
