I'm sure there's some Jeep fans out there who would argue they have the most capable based on actual specs too.
I pre-run off road courses, go into air so far I can count before I touch down, fly over big whoops faster than a Supercrosser would dare. Even though my truck is pretty specific setup I can tell you that the Raptor is a Baja fan's dream come true. No, it is not intended to be a rockcrawler like a Jeep, but it will take a fire road with 1-2 ft whoops at 70-80 miles an hour, thats what its built for. 1-2 ft whoops at 35 mph in a Jeep or production truck will break the dash in half. And for the record.....a lifted truck with big ass tires (hence your stereotype, which is probably well founded) is not an offroad capable truck either, the Raptor is very different and I applaud Ford for bringing it to the fore

Is its premise stupid?, perhaps, to people that have never raced off-road. I agree, it would be a stupid soccer mom rig. But most of the people that pre-ordered these a year ago when they were being promoted at Baja style events are truly enthusiasts that are pounding the pi*s out of them as we speak in the deserts of the Southwest. For us it does not get any better, and really no more foolish than people buying SS's when basic speed limit transportation will do

And for the the Capums info, most performance vehicles are tested at speed, on a course or at a track, just like the Camaro SS, which relates little to the workaday world most of these things are going to be subjected to. But just like the Camaro, its nice to know what the vehicle is capable of. I have full confidence the Raptor will clear a beaver dam or lug up a gnarly steep mountain grade just fine. Want a shorter turning radius?, whip the back end around with your foot to the carpet and you can turn it inside your living room

From all appearances it's a very capable truck in most conditions.

Someone pointed out the Motor Trend article on offroad capability- I'd like to point out Motor Trend thinks a Subaru is an SUV. So whatever.

Here's my review from someone who's never driven one.

Although I think the independant front suspension is much better on mining roads and sand/open desert, I think solid axles are going to be better if you want to crawl around in the rocks (where you go super slow and want to keep all 4 wheels touching all the time). So let your playground determine how good a fit that is. By all appearances, it may be the best stock desert/mining road type vehicle that I've ever seen.

It would be overkill on the 4x4 capability and underkill on the truck capability if you are looking for a truck that will do general purpose off-roading tasks. 6000lbs towing capacity is pretty limiting. We're not talking "Washington Monument", we're talking wet weight of an 18 foot trailer. You'd definitely struggle with even the smallest toy hauler style trailer.

Overall I think the Raptor is pretty extraordinary, particularly in these economic conditions. It's a play truck though.

I hear ya on the towing capacity, but thats what 2500's and 3500's are for. I did see someone with a Raptor towing a 20 ft. box trailer loaded down pretty well coming back from the sand dunes last night and it did seemed no worse for wear. All the SVT trucks such as the Lightning and Harley edtions for 6000 pounds towing but they pull just fine, just can't go overboard. Admittedly its a pleasure vehicle much more so than a workhorse, much like the Camaro

And sorry, sidenote- 1st of all cool pics.

I don't do this, but I know some people who do. And I'll tell you 38k is a bargain if it can do half of what it appears to be able to do. ^He speaks the truth.

Anything exceeding what the Raptor will do is well over 100k.............just ask wife (household accountant). But its a lot of fun and she can jump it farther than I can, so I am blessed in that regard........she loves driving the damn thing more than I do!

That looks like a lot of fun Cliffy, I've built up a couple of crawlers (a 77 Blazer and a Samurai--and don't laugh, Samurais make awesome crawlers) but it started to become too time and money intensive. So I sold them and bought ATV's. I still like to go watch 'em in action though.

If I lived in the desert SW I'd be drooling all over a Raptor though.

I'd have to agree in saying the very large majority of these will catch the Hummer Syndrome lol. But the Raptor deserves to be pimped out, it is a great looking vehicle, with my only problem being they could have came up with a better emblem instead of the huge FORD written across it.

With Age Comes A Cage Baby-------!!!!!

Went the opposite, got rid of the quads and got strapped into a 5 point harness. I hit a kiddy track out in the middle of the sand dunes in darkness oy that hurt !

So, after all that we can agree that making a statement that the raptor is the most capable off road vehicle is about as logical as saying a top fuel dragster is the most capable sports car.

It's been obvious to me that there are different forms of off roading just like there are differing forms of track racing.

My issue is with people proclaiming the raptor as the most capable offroad vehicle ever made, which is patently false. Yet I keep getting lambasted for daring to disagree with the statement.
