I heard that in the event of a crash they were designed to bounce off the impacted object and roll. Kinda like the "tuck and roll" theory. Lol
It would be hard for me to feel safe in a car like that.

Crash ratings are used to rate a car against how well it would do in a crash against a vehicle of similar size and weight. So a Smart vs a Smart ... you're probably going to be safe. But since almost everything on the roads besides motorcycles are bigger & heavier than a Smart ... those crash ratings can be thrown out the window since they don't work across classes. So if a 4 star Smart were to hit a 3 star full size sedan, the ones in the sedan would probably have fewer injuries, despite the lower rating.
