GUN SHOWS

Headed to the Big Reno Show this next week. I collect S&W revolvers and Reno has yielded some great additions to the collection over the past ten years.

The Vegas Arms Show is another good one.

Anyone else headed to Reno?

Very nice choice, a good friend of mine just got the 229 legion in 40cal. He let me check it out and now it's on my radar for my next gun purchase. There is nothing bad to say about these legion series sig sauer pistols.

Good photo's too....Thanks. We always like photos.
Thanks guys! You really can't go wrong with one. Price-wise, definitely poke around, I got mine out the door for a little over $1100.

So I was restocking myself with ammo for the Mini-14 and purely on a whim I picked up a Kimber Two-Tone 1911 in 9mm with a 5" barrel. For being several ounces heavier than my son's XD-S it actually felt lighter and more natural with a nice smooth feel to its operation. I'm thinking real serious about picking it up, so does anybody have any direct personal experience with Kimbers? Supposedly Kimber has made all the extractors internal, which I have heard was a problem in the past.

I'm in NJ, where CC is damn near impossible to get, so I'm specifically looking at the 5". Didn't seem to be a bad price, well under $800, and I'm not looking at starting a big pistol collection.

I'll keep you guys posted when I can get it out to the range after I get it.
Yeah when I got mine it was my second one. I have a CZ 75 P07 Duty as well. Sorry for your state....I chose the Compact/Carry model as it has the same grip size and capacity (15+1) as the full sized model. Having a good sized "mit" I really needed a compact at a minimum. I REALLY hate it when my pinky is hanging off the butt of the gun. its not a comfortable feel.

P320 SC in .40SW. Picked it up this morning. Can fit about half of my pinky around the butt, so it'll work.

Yep owned three of them, not one was reliable. Their customer service sucks, at least it used to. Remember also that there is nothing Custom, about a Kimber Custom, except the branded name.

The worst part was trying to get a smith to help me out getting them reliable before I put them up for sale. I just kept getting reply's like..... its a Kimber, then a chuckle, then ........good luck with that!

Sorry but you asked.

Also, in USPSA some new shooters show up with a Kimber, they always find out quickly how they run and then we see them come back the next week with something solid.

All thoughts and opinions welcome. I do understand that the 'Custom' part of the name indicates nothing further than that. That a true custom build is something else entirely.

Do you recall any general trends in what the new shooters showed up with the next time?

FWIW, at not quite 70 (with a 20+ year old lens implant in my right eye) I'm probably not going to get into competitive shooting. Something between budget and $900, maybe $1k to go down to the range with (and consistently outshoot my son and his guns with ) ought to be about right.

I would suggest talking to a local competition 1911 gun builder. I know one here that would make a great shooting 1911 in this price range. Remember it is just for shooting nothing fancy or expensive. No special coatings, etchings, dimples etc. That is when builds get expensive. Could buy the parts off of brownells. In fact some one just recently built a caspian framed 1911 on this thread not too long ago if my memory is correct.

Such a thing exists in New Jersey?

I did take a look at a couple of options earlier today - a Range Officer and a Taurus, both in 1911/5"/9mm. Ruger doesn't make that combination, only 4".

That is a fair answer that I am sure isd a yes but I do not have any experience with. Maybe go to your local gun store you feel is the most reliable and ask who they use for a 1911 gun smith if not in house.

This is how I found my guy for 1911, AR's, Glocks.

Should I check my pistol in as checked baggage just in the gun case it shipped with, or should I put that cased pistol inside another piece of luggage?

I am going on a one way to pick up my car, so I don't really need luggage, just not sure I trust a small pistol case that is clearly a pistol with the baggage department.

Advice appreciated.

Put it in another suitcase unless you want it to get "lost". TSA will know it's in there, but hopefully the baggage handlers won't.

Double-check the airline's rules. I think the ammo has to be in the cabin (not where the firearm is in the cargo compartments) IIRC.

If the 1911 is for a range gun and not specifically for Carry be sure to get an all steel one.

I own and have shot both for a long time and agree with how Ed Brown describes it, an aluminum framed 1911 is made for Carry, a steel one is made for shooting.

Norm, for the price the Springfield RO in either 9mm or .45 is very hard to beat. I have the stainless in 9mm and it is a very solid shooter. Also if there was ever an issue with it, Springfield will pay shipping both ways to correct it. I use Tripp Cobra mags or Dawson Precision, good mags are a must have with any 1911.
