And its true... which is why mid sized car's like the Tacoma are more popular for off roading... and more effective. Cheaper too fix as well.

but that whole 'lighter is better' is the whole reason those vehicles aren't made to tow heavy loads.

Isn't jeep bring out a diesel in one of their small SUVs, or did that fall thru?

I think its the Jeep liberty.... which is an awful car.

Edit: went to Jeep's site where they advertise a 3.0L Turbo Diesel in the Jeep Grand Cherokee which is a car I actually like.... but upon further examination they don't offer it on the car....

http://www.jeep.com/en/2010/grand_ch...apability/mpg/

wtf????

You'd think that as an engineer my first response would have been "different designs for different applications".

My brother owned a diesel Jeep Liberty. It was pretty cool for what it was. It manage about 26 mpg. Not bad for a 4wd SUV.

The only reason he traded it off was it was too small for him, he's 6'4" and is 300lbs.

I just don't think the general public is ready for diesels in general. To quote my wife, "They stink when they run and your hands get smelly when you fill it up." That's from an Okie farm girl.

Now that half ton equipped with the 4.5L Diesel they were making would have been one hell of a performance truck. A simple tune would have that thing smoking Lightnings with ease most likely.

With some minor mods it would have been a runner for sure. To me the most fun would have been in a SUV and playing with touring sedans.

maybe. the thing with diesels to remember is that they make most of their power down low (<3500rpms) and arent designed to run high rpms where most gasoline motors make the most power (>3500rpms). while it might have buttloads of torque to pull most anything, it will probably not do well on the top end.

that was actually the main focus for the 4.5L was for the heavy cadillacs and other SUV's

Go all out, titanium and carbon fiber all the way. Off road like a small truck and tow and haul like a one ton, it'll just cost $150,000
