It's definitely quicker. I've got the 150 10k drive in my desktop. The CPU is a lil sub-par, only has 3gb of ram but still pretty quick.

I think it'll be a while before 15k RPM drives make it to desktops. I mean you could always pick up a SAS card and get a "server" drive, not like they're really any different. You'll just pay out the butt for it. 10k drives are relatively new in desktops but have been in servers for a loonggg time.

I'm building a budget gaming pc. I was going to buy vista, but I may just install beta until 7 releases.

So far I have...
-Antec 300 case
-antec 650w ps
-intel dX38bt mobo

plan on buying
-8gb ddr2 1066 dominator
-300 velociraptor hdd
-intel e8500 cpu
-ati hd4890
-windows vista or 7
I have that same case, and its awesome.

As for the power supply, I'd go with the Sigma Monster 1000w - Its what I use, and its cheaper than the antec 650 (and just as reliable as my antec truepower 650 was).

You probably don't need that expensive of a hard drive. I'd get two 7200 satas and stripe them - it would be almost as fast as the 10000 ssd.

And definitely just go with 7.

I know enough about computers (not really), but I am kind of lost when it comes to switch OS's.

I have a lap top that is running Vista on it now that I don't use. Can I install Windows 7 and if I don't like it, take it off? Or do I have to enter 0's and 1's and gain access to a mainframe and reboot and etc etc...

I'm really interested in trying it out.

You'll have to have the Vista installation media if you want to go back which may or may not have come with your computer.

Alternatively you could try using a disk management utility to recover some of the space from your vista partition, and set up a dual boot... if you end up liking 7 enough, you can just wipe it and do a fresh install.

And if you don't you could wipe that part and reintegrate it.

Yup. This probably is a better option than wiping the machine.

And there's actually tools included with the Vista/Windows 7 installers to do this. Little known trick... once you're in the installer you can hit Shift+F10 and it will pop up a command prompt. If your machine has one partition you can shrink it down by running the following commands...

diskpart
select disk 0
select partition 1
shrink

Then in the installer you will see the empty space and you should be able to select it and install Windows 7 there.

I have the operating system reinstallation DVD and the Dell Driver and Utilities Disc. Those bad boys should be what I need.

I'm guessing installation is pretty straight-forward as well?

The installation for Vista & 7 is super easy. Maybe too easy lol.

"Microsoft Virtual PC."

The best of both worlds. I have a Win7 VM running within my Vista base OS.

It works well.

Some multimedia glitches, but if you are on the fence, a virtual machine is the only way to go until you are decided.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...2-2dc0b40a73b6

Be sure and get SP1.

No partition magic or fuss. Just load it up as a "guest" to your "host."

PS- Be careful on how much RAM you dedicate to the "guest."

Any questions, let me know.

PS- Me likey Win7.

Honestly, I wouldn't use Virtual PC. It doesn't give you the full experience. Win7 is stable enough to use as your full time OS. I have been since January.
