I agree....but why public sector unions are needed these days makes no sense.

TN passed laws this year that basically stripped our teacher unions of all their powers and they can't do anything for me that I need done. They are slowly but surely taking away what few rights teachers did have. I teach all day and there are times that I would just like to go to the bathroom, but I can't due to my schedule and the liability of leaving 23 ten-year-olds unattended for even a second. If something happened while I was out, my district is not going to back me up - my union would have. I am a tenured teacher of 16 years with several degrees and an awesome track record. I could be fired at the end of the year without any "real" reason if they just felt like I was making too much money. They can hire two brand-new teachers for the price of one of me now that there is no union to stand in the way. With jobs being what they are in education, he should take the job and stop whining about Union dues.
What are teacher's "rights" anyway? Last I checked the only rights we're afforded are God given and those outlined in the constitution.

Just as you say my brother should stop "whining" about being forced into a union, perhaps you should stop whining about not being in one. If you're as good as you say then your job is secure and what's more is that there's no union limiting how much money you can make! I'm sure folks in TN want good teachers just like everyone else, you'll be fine.

So your brother applied for a teaching position, was offered a job and is unhappy with the requirements needed to fulfill the position? This translates to public sector unions are preventing him from employment according to your mindset. Thanks for the laugh and let us know if he takes the job.

Also, most public unions have an umbrella system of coverage. Take for instance Federal Employees. There are unions and employees pay dues and then there are non-paying employee members. Guess what? The union fights for all employees regardless if they are dues paying members. Example. A non-dues paying member wants to file a grievance, the union goes thru the exact same procedure as if a grievance was filed by a dues member. Everyone is represented the same. In short, the employee chooses to be a dues paying member, they are not forced or coerced.
