Longer - Wider - Lower

So how do they make it BIGGER, and substantially lighter, and price it at mid-$20s? I guess the big diet won't be so big, after all.
Light weight materials. Also, lets be honest here we are at MOST talking about .5" bigger. It's not like it's gaining inches everywhere.

Mustang To Become All Things To All People?

Responding to a GoAuto inquiry on the possibility of a diesel Stang, Ford’s global powertrain head Bob Fascetti says that the automaker isn’t “looking at diesel at the moment, but given where we need to go with fuel consumption we are looking at all our options.” He continues on to say that those options include diesel, ”along with hybrids and electric.” Sounds crazy, right?

Here’s why it isn’t as wild as you might think:

Regardless of whether Mr. Fascetti was merely postulating or if Ford actually is looking at a hybrid Mustang doesn’t matter—he is right when he references the industry’s need to meet stricter fuel-economy standards the world over. That’s why the new Mustang is getting a turbocharged 2.3-liter four, and a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 (EcoBoost, in Ford speak) likely will arrive later in the model’s life to replace the naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V-6. Still, we don’t necessarily see a hybrid fitting into the Mustang scheme, like, ever, but a high-output diesel certainly could be interesting. As for the electric version . . . we’re fairly confident Ford wouldn’t actually go through with such a wild option.

It’s also worth pointing out, lest any of you have already picked up your pitchforks and begun readying any war cries, that Ford wouldn’t necessarily bring a fuel-economy Mustang special to the U.S. It could leave the diesel, hybrid, or electric version (should any of them come to fruition) in Europe, where customer acceptance of a mongrel Mustang wouldn’t be saddled with the baggage of 50 years of pony-car legend and tradition the way it would here. So long as Ford still offers a good ol’ fashioned, all-American V-8 engine, we say have at it—starting with that oddball diesel.

So Ford says they're open to all kinds of things (not specifically Mustang) and it is interpreted as Mustang will be a hybrid.

Gotcha

Perhaps, if they build 'em that way, they can TROUNCE a Prius. Won't Shelby be proud?

And an electric version could finally honorably wear the 500-E stripes, too!

I would love to see a 550hp Mustang that runs in the 11s and gets 40MPGs. The tree huggers would probably all kill themselves because they wouldn't know how to cope.

I'm not arguing with you. Simply calling you out as trolling.

I've been a smart fish though and didn't take the bait (as delicious and yummy as it looks good).

More use of aluminum for one. I know the front fenders are now aluminum, as well as a lot of the suspension components. (including the new IRS) With so much aluminum used in the IRS, it might not be as heavy as you think. It remains to be seen where other light weight materials are used. Also worth noting...While the S550 might have gotten wider, (nothing drastic to make a big difference) the actual amount of sheet metal has been reduced by a sizeable amount. That's why it appears smaller.

While on the topic of size, the S550 is not really longer. If you consider 3mm longer than that's silly. How many strands of hair do you think that is? Lol!

I'll also point out that the roof line is substantially lower than the S197, so while it might have gotten a little wider in the right areas, (the rear) it also shrunk drastically in others.

Furthermore, it was mentioned that Ford has designed and optimized the S550 chassis with weight reduction and ultra high steel strength in mind. It's widely reported that Ford is working with Boron steel now, and that stuff is amazing. Check the link below. There is no doubt the S550 is a lighter and stronger platform than the old S197 one.

https://media.ford.com/content/fordm...Safe/Boron.pdf

Other things that were mentioned was that the transmission was reworked with a lighter casing.

For what it's worth, I don't believe for one second we will see the amount of weight loss that was originally reported, but I do believe that we will see a lighter Mustang. How much lighter is all speculation at this point. I know Ford worked really hard looking at every area of the car to cut weight, and have made it a priority to lose weight on all it's car's across the board. I seriously doubt that they are gonna come out with a heavier Mustang than the S197 and I think there are still quite a few surprises left.

Sarcastic as you may be, it's worth pointing out, the I4T's performance varient will most likely be handled by Ford's European Team RS and not SVT. SVT will helm the hi-po V8 trims.
