Frangible. Literally easily broken. In firearms, they are supposed to break when they hit walls etc during close quarters battle.

During WWII, they actually had piloted aircraft called 'pinballs' that were fired upon by other aircraft firing frangible rounds, for training. A light on the aircraft lit up when the plane was hit.

Also, some ranges require them as they are lead free.

I've shot at an indoor range that required all rifle ammo be frangible. I shot some 5.56 there. The main notable differences were it cost 50% more than normal ammo and didn't seem as accurate.

I have no issues with accuracy. What I like about them, is that they do major damage to your target, but thats it. It will go through one sheet of drywall, yet not the other.

I am just asking because I got pulled over the other day, and the cop gave me shit for having them. Said that they were better suited for law enforcement, and that as a defensive round, there are better options out there. I don't share that opinion.

Sounds like a contradiction from the officer.

Most cops don't know much about firearms. I would do my own research before I ever took advice from an LEO.

I tend to agree. Not everyone issued a tool for their job is an expert with or about it. To be honest, the two most foolish comments about firearms I have ever heard first-hand were from a cop, and from a decorated army officer.

Then again I know an ex- Cobra pilot who actually is expert, and I had an uncle who was a PD detective who was expert. But the point is, just because a guy uses a paint brush on the job, well, he might be good enough to paint a house, but it doesn't also make him Rembrandt.

You would think since their life depended on it, they would.

That is accurate........we get the big ego, poor gun safety, cops out to shoot USPSA practice matches with us occasionally. Usually have some girl with them they are trying to impress. Most of them just don't understand, gun games is our sport!

The cops that don't get it sometime leave on their own after being totally shown up on the stages, but usually due to their attitude or performing an unsafe act with their firearm they are asked to leave.

Other cops that come out and want to get better with their firearm, show respect and follow the safety rules are given as much help and advise as we can offer. The military guys are a great example of this, very respectfull and ask lots of questions, we try to make sure they shoot for free and if possible keep their ammo buckets full to shoot as much as they want.

I looked at frangibles about 15 years ago as a defensive round and stay far away from them. While the wound channel they leave might tend to look cool, they penetrate worse than hollow points and penetration is the name of the game.

You need your bullet to reach vitals, regardless of whether your target is 350 pounds, turned sideways, at an angle, behind glass, and sheetrock, and 3 layers of denim. If your round goes through your target fully, excellent. Two holes bleed faster than one.

The following is an excellent read from the FBI on handgun wounding factors and effectiveness. I highly encourage you (and everyone else) to read it. It's very easy to read and makes a lucid argument for penetration and caliber choice.

First question is: do they let you have that in Cali? I'm not joking.

Sold my first SPAS to my friend as coverage for the cost of the install of my IPF supercharger (shoddy QA on the part of IPF ). Finally found a perfect replacement SPAS on Gunbroker and had to have it.
