'Earlier' according to who's timeline? There's what we want to do and what we can make happen, not 'we're trying to do this early according to a timeline based on when such things would be developed by private industry'.

Don't care how their annual budget is figured. It's still a big waste. I'm not saying all of it. But someone please tell me why we are spending all this money to go back to the moon? And mars? That's like throwing a hail mary pass in the 3rd quarter.

So we should spend 15 billion dollars to create how many jobs? Most of those jobs would still be filled if we diverted the funds to something that is more practical and makes more sense.

Agreed. But for this topic alone, there is just a lot of waste. The moon stuff is what irritates me. I don't believe there is anything on the moon that's sooooo important that we need to spend money on it. Not right now anyway.
I couldn't agree more PQ. We should spend more money on space exploration?!? For what?!? Just for the exploration?!? How does it help us?! Whether there's water on the moon or not, does that change the way we live or should live? I'm not convinced.

Well I'm not sure about needing water from the moon HERE, but I do believe that ability to NOT have to haul water to the moon is a huge deal. Water is 8 pounds per gallon and you need quite a bit of it to keep a man or a woman alive on the moon......................................for low gravity research and manufacturing.........................which I believe saves human lives.

Surprised by the negativity on this subject. Exploration is (IMO) the essence of mankind. If we didn't explore where would we be today. Or are you just saying we've explored enough and we should just stop now?

Don't get me wrong, I respect your opinions, just surprised a little.

And seriously, just google the things that have resulted from space exploration. Think of things that you use every day that are a result of space exploration. And just think of how happy X will be driving a Camaro on the moon.

Surprised nobody posted this, yet...

And, on a more serious note, I full expect to see asteroid mining before I die. It's the only way we're going to be able to sustain life on this planet, at the rate it's growing, unless we figure out how to synthetically manufacture molecules.

without the space program...there would be no satellites...and with no satellites, there'd be no Onstar (among other things).

According to the Discovery Channel, the dark spots on the moon are due to higher concentrations of uranium. Being in the uranium mining business myself, I'll volunteer myself to go up along with a few drillers and complete a feasibility study

waste of money? you're entitled to your own opinion. but oh well and no wonder this earth is so screwed up.

so many minor advancements have been achieved that make our lives so easier due to research funded by nasa.

Also got a question for you P what do you truly consider better research?
