From 1979 to 1993, they made "Mustangs"...or at least cars that had the "Mustang" badge on them. Seriously though, those cars were pitiful and didn't really resemble a pony car or the Mustang. It'd be like Chevy badging a car like the Lumina as a Camaro and saying they kept up production. That's how different the "Mustangs" from that period are from what I consider "real" Mustangs.
