I went to a university got a degree. worked a few different jobs until I got this one. been here 5+ years now and am basically middle management. so not too bad I guess.
best advice I could give is if you don't know what you want to do then don't go to school right away. you will just waste time and money. I lost a year bouncing around in school before I got my degree. go travel or something it may open your eyes to something new and cool. that is something I wish I had done.....

But serious. College may seem uninteresting right now, and much like you did in high school, you will have those times where you think, "How the hell is THIS gonna get me get paid"? lol Well, it will. You have to trust that. Me? I joined the military. 4 years on Ft. Bragg (well, 6 months or so ON Ft. Bragg, the rest deployed or training, lol) It is the best decision I had ever made. Not being necessarily self motivated, it provided me with everything I needed to transition from a punk kid with no direction, to a man with goals and realization of my goals. Todays military PUSHES you to get your education and they pay for it. All while getting to serve your country and have experiences that a non-vet will never know. And nobody can ever take away from you. Not trying to recruit you. Just saying, you can't go wrong this way. ![]() I own my own business with my beautiful wife and couldn't be happier. I turned 40 this passed July. |

I joined the Army as a Satellite Communications Technician in 1991. The training for it took just over a year of the 6 years I had to sign up for to get the job. I stayed on the east coast the entire time I was in. When I got out, I started working as a government contractor doing the exact same job that I was doing in the Army. I'm still doing the same thing and making about $80K a year now. It was a great experience and set me up for a pretty good job.

I did the college route...partied.....business.
I continue to regret not serving my country. Could have gone into the Airforce as Lieutenant out of high school, but the parting won out. Bad decision on my part. Should have put in 3-6 in armed forces, then school. Son(21) is in college(aerospace eng), keep pushing him towards service. He said I was right about school and is having a blast on campus. So there is hope he may see it my way in the end!

Thats cool. I am getting ready to retire myself. I have no idea what I am going to do for a living, but I am not worried. Something will come up.

Best thing you can do is be adaptable. Whenever you are forced to make a change make it for the better and you will do fine in whatever you choose. Good luck.

Well, hopped into college after 3 months of summer vacation. 4.5 years later I'm sitting here reading C5 and studying my ass off so I can 'officially' work on aircraft.
I had no idea what I wanted to do, mind you. I loved airplanes, history, music.. dabbled in all three during highschool. Found music didn't have a stable market to it job wise while being a teacher sounded cool.. Then when it came time to actually look at colleges the first one.. airplanes, took hold. Now, in 2010 I can say that I made such an awesome career choice. Though, if it weren't for all the electricity crap that I have to keep going over I'd have my license by now. Not to mention the pay is insane for what you do, and to work at a working airport around airplanes is just something else. And, though some may not know this; some employers pay their mechanics to become commercial pilots too. That way, they can send the guy up that fixed it to make sure it works. That, is why I'm putting up with the stigma of moving back in with my parents and spinning my tires. I want to fly, and not just down the road in the T/A. ![]() Be warned though, it's a pricey proposition. Pilot tuition can easily exceed 100K. Mine tapped out to 65K. Can you do it without the degree? Yeah, it's cheaper too. But think about it; do you want to go around without a 4 year degree that down the road could open doors for you that wouldn't be accessible to someone without a degree? That's why I went 4 years in college. |
