That's a tough one. But it's occurring in more and more states now. Now that the ball is rolling.......perhaps easier for others.

Finally at 40 I purchased my first weapon.

Colt LE 6940 AR-15

I went to the store with my DD-214 thinking that I would need to show courses in firearms training. Nope, not needed. Drivers license, $1500 in cash, 2-3 minutes for my background check. "All done. Would you like to purchase any spare magazines, ammo, or accessories?"

Walked out of the store with my AR in hand and about $2000 poorer! Haha

Besides a gun safe I've been wondering what to handgun to get. So many options it's hard to figure out where to start. And of course I need to get a 12 gauge.

P.s. Why am I just finding this thread now 400+ pages in?

Nice AR. Enjoy it!

You're best bet for a handgun that you can CCW and use for home defense, is a modern, striker-fired polymer-framed 9mm, like a Glock 19/17, Smith M&P's, Springfield XD series and so on.

Regarding pistols, any cal 9mm or above, 9, 40 and 45 are most popular. Don't concern yourself with cal debates, any of the above are fine.

9 and 40 can give you hi cap magazines depending on the pistol.

Steel vs poly frame, just get what you like. Steel is heavier but helps a bit with recoil, poly for all day carry, lighter.

First pistol i would go with a large us mfg. New orlightly used at a discount.

Under 3 inch barrel is easily concealed but jumpy. 4 inch is a Nice length. 5 and up tends to be smoother feeling shooting but hard to conceal.

Adjustable rear sight is great. Night glow inserts are awesome. I recommend a pistol that can be fitted with tritium sights.

If you've never shot before, especially If you have children , get something with a manual safety, not a glock.

Take a good basic shooter class. Money well spent.

All great info... I'm searching around for a new semi-auto pistol myself right now.

New Mexico is the same until "Pay for gun". After that it's take it home!!

++++++++++++++++++++

Here's Nevada from an FFL: Walk in. Point at Gun. Fill out ATF form. Present CCW permit which takes the place of the background phone call. Pay. Pick up new gun and walk out with it. If no one is in line in front of you, you're literally in and out of the gun store with your new toy in 5 minutes.

We still have face-to-face gun trades/sales between citizens, too. No background check needed. Although Bloomberg is trying to change that during the elections this year......
Texas is the same!

Florida's process might be the same with not requiring the background check with a CCW. I just got my permit last month so I haven't bought anything with it yet.

Thank you guys for all the great advice.

I've fired many different types of pistols. I won't be carrying. Just don't feel the need.

I wonder how many victims of violence ever said that? I think of CCW like car insurance. Have it but hope you never need to use it. If you do, you'll be glad you did.
