I can see more issues being a problem than it would solve.
You should watch the interview with Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla). He specifically addresses those worries. Effectively, there would still be brick-and-mortar stores to go to and talk with sales reps (there would also be licensed technicians for servicing and warranty work) but all of the employees would work directly for Tesla, not a franchise.

It would be almost identical to the way Apple products are sold at an Apple Store. As a customer, the process would be very similar to a normal car-buying experience at a franchise dealership, but the sales reps don't work off of commission so they're only concerned with getting you into the car that you really want.

Dealership franchise laws are archaic and have outlived their usefulness. At this point, the only purpose they serve is to prevent newcomers from threatening the major players in the automotive industry.

I cannot think of any legitimate and logical reasoning as to why an auto maker cannot sell vehicles directly to the consumer. The only reason those laws are still in place is because the big dealerships don't want to have to change the way they do business.

So..Fenwick...tackle this (maybe again)

My good friend teasingly refers to my Camaro as "just a Chevrolet"

Yesterday he traded his Mercedes SUV for a 2013 crew cab GMC Denali pickup..loaded...$58Kish

So, I referred to it as "just a Chevrolet"

Then the GMC is better argument ensued.

We all know GM implies that GMC is "the truck", and GMC probably brands more types of trucks than Chev does.

Is there any difference whatsoever on like year, like configuration vehicles other than badges and grilles? Obviously they likely come down the same line. But do they maybe have higher trim levels or anything substantively different

It depends on how you look at it.

The GMC brand is seen as more premium to Chevrolet. It's how GM markets it and it's how the brand is sold in dealerships. In addition, packaging plays a big role in this. For example, Sierras will get more features per trim level.

That being said, the vehicles are fundamentally the same. Silverado/Sierra, Tahoe/Yukon, Suburban/Yukon XL, etc. Same platforms, usually the same powertrains/drivetrains, but sometimes different body designs.

HOWEVER: GMCs get Denali models. That brings a level of luxury above your equivalent Chevrolet.

Doesn't matter how old & archaic those laws are, they still exist and they present a massive barrier for any automaker that has established themselves in the US.
