The price premium for a diesel is simply too high with our EPA busy trying kill off the diesels. The price premium will never pay off in mileage for the average life of the truck.

Look at the diesel Cruze. 46mpg (gas 42mpg) for >$4000 premium. It will take you 483,000 miles to break even at $4 a gallon.

That same issue will be seen with the diesel Colorado.

Even though consumer diesels are only a couple percent of sales, the EPA thinks they are the biggest issue facing life on the planet today.

Now, if they could have put that 300HP 4.5L V8 diesel in there, then I'd buy. But the bankruptcy killed that whole program.

They would have better luck using the Voltec drive components and selling a truck that had a 80 mpg e-rating. Just like the Volt and ELR, put enough battery in it to get 38 miles on electricity, which is the average distance for 90% of the drivers. Then a 200HP gas engine for extended range or on-demand like mountains. You'd have a truck with similar operating costs as today's Prius, and unlimited range.
Not sure where you get the 4 grand premium from, because the closest equivalent Cruze to the diesel is a 2LT automatic. That brings the premium down to 'only' about $2400. That is still a lot, but you are also getting a better engine (in terms of power & torque) so its very difficult to make a true apples to apples comparison. I think it would be very likely that a gasoline engine with similar combined output such as the NA 2.5L would yield a $1,500 premium all by itself over the 1.4 turbo. In which case, the premium of the diesel over an otherwise equal car is down to about a grand, and the fuel economy difference would be even greater.

But yes, for those that are focused on saving money, its a bad choice. On the other hand, if anyone wants to save money what are they doing buying a new car in the first place? If cost is that important of an issue to them, they should be scoping out the used car lot.

You follow the diesel world more closely than I do (I assume) but I thought the 4.5 program was only shelved, and has possibly been dusted off recently -due to the actions & plans of Ram, Nissan, and Toyota.

I compared it to the other turbocharged fuel stingy 42mpg model. People are going to buy the diesel for it's mileage. None of the Cruze engines is very powerful.

But yes, the 2LT is a more comparible trim level. Best case, is that you will pay for the diesel option in only about 150,000 miles.

I hadn't seen a real pic of the Rain Forest Green on the Colorado yet, thought maybe ya'll hadn't seen it either. Looks great but I could never pick another color besides the Laser Blue. GM always has the best wheel designs as well and this design has grown on me.

Laser Blue for me too!

The above configuration is exactly what I'd want. Crew cab, in 4x4 (non Z71) with the projector headlamps....but I'd want the short bed.

The long bed looks a bit awkward to me, but honestly if they just had one bed that was in between the 5' and 6' I think it would look perfect.

Assuming the gas mileage isn't atrocious...I will own one of these. Can't wait.

Should we assume that same GMC/Chevy differences? More expensive base on the GMC but more standard equipment and luxury? I can't decide which I like more now.

Thanks Camaro_Corvette. That's really interesting...wonder how the pricing will step up from a Base to WT to LT to Z71.

Also, you can compare the standard/optional features for Colorado/Canyon here: http://www.gmfleetorderguide.com/NAS...ID=1&year=2015

I would expect the usual GMC price premium.

We have bought several Chevy and GMC pickup trucks in the last decade.

Identically optioned, they are the same price.

But the GMC's just look better, are faster, and chicks dig 'em.
