Thanks guys. She sure has come a long way since Sept 2012 when she weighed 206lbs.
Shooting for 315 squat, 205 bench, 365 deadlift by the fall....all raw....then she is going to "gear up" to hit some really big numbers.

Hello all, great thread by the way. What is the best exercise to do to burn fat. I've always been between slightly overweight to very over weight. I'm 5'8" weigh 190lbs and have bounced between 180 and 200lbs the last 4 years. At my worst I was 240lbs for a couple years and started having knee and back problems. I live in tiny town USA with no gyms or trainers to get advice from. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Now depending on your goals is the exercise you need to do... what I learn is compound exercises are the best to achieve both! Losing body fat and building muscle! Then you have HIIT cardio... there's links here about it, good information! Eating habits are important too, if you read here is different opinions about diet or not, at the end all agree that control is the key! You need to control how much you eat daily! If you consume more that you burn = getting fat... consume less= lose weight... it's a slow process but worth it! Stick around and learn! Plus put a photo that way we can see how to help you better!

How do you measure body fat?

There are various methods that are all situationally accurate. A skin fold test is usually considered the most accurate, but it's only as good as the person using the calipers.
The body resistance one can by used kind of as a baseline (Little electronic device you hold in your hands), but varies on how hydrated you are, how much salt you intake, and other things. If you use this method, treat it like a dyno, and not litterally. Then there are is a wrist to waist to height calculation (that I can't remember how to make), but any calculations relying on those measurements only work well for average builds. Large bone structure will throw that off. I for one don't even bother with body fat percentages any more. I take weekly measurements friday morning of my weight, and the measurements of my waist (around the belly button), and keep a log. I also measure my arms and legs in the same manner. If you're cutting, you can expect to see your arms and legs stay about the same (maybe gaining a little size), your weight dropping hopefully about a pound every week, and the distance around your waist coming off slowly. That of course is assuming you don't hold a lot of body fat in different areas of your body. The less you have everywhere else, the most you will notice your waistline trimming down.

just to give an idea here is a sample of what I eat when I eat clean***Reminder this was the plan my personal trainer gave me!
this is for women's needs 3-4 oz of protein 1-2 cups veggies 2 tsp of fat 1/4 cup of carbs EVERY MEAL 7:00 - 5-6 egg whites 1 cup of fresh spinach 2 tbsp chopped almonds 10:00 - protein Meal replacement shake 1:00 - 3-4 oz of lean turkey 1-2 cups broccoli 1/4 cup of brown rice 4:00 - 1/2 cup cottage cheese 1/2 strawberry 2tsp chopped almonds 7:00 - Cauliflower Crust Pizza (the crust is made from cauliflower - sounds yuck but man it is fabulous, I tweaked the recipe to fit my meal plan needs) 9:30 - Apple I drink roughly 90-100 oz of water basically I am consuming 200-350 calories at each meal, giving my body just enough "fuel" to get me through to the next meal. your body can only consume 300-400 calories at any given time - what this means is if you eat 700 calories your body will process 00 of them and put 400 of them into storage AKA Fat!!! I take supplements due to the strict restriction of carbs and cals (weight loss is my goal).

its tricky and is hardly ever spot on, as one said it is only has good as the person with the calipers. if the person does a 3 point pinch then I wouldn't put much stock in the number they give... I would do at least 5 points (Back of arm, chest, belly, inner thigh, and back) this will give a little better results.
the resistance thing they were talking about is terrible... I did mine last night and the damn machine told me me I was AT RISK and extremely obese then recommended that I go get a heart check blah blah blah I've got a little extra fluff from the winter but I am by no means "extremely obese" ![]() the machines are working off a "formula" and it does not consider the individual person. another thing for all to remember is don't take just your WEIGHT be sure to do measurements!!! this will keep some from getting discouraged! the scale will stop, or slow down possibly even go the opposite way from your goal. using a measuring tap will keep you focus and will help you keep track of your progress!

I eat 900- 1400 calories a day and drink roughly 10 12oz glasses of water per day. The only exercise I do is treadmill 3 times a week 20-30 min. Can't run since I had a torn meniscus repaired back in Dec and it still won't allow me to run so I walk 4mph 8% incline. I will do light lifting on a bowflex machine 2-3 times per week approx. 20 minutes.

5'8" 190 so not petite at all. I just started cutting calories until I started losing weight and I still don't feel hungry.
