The last time there was an earthquake like this in the region was 1998. The magnitude of this quake was about the same as some aftershocks in Haiti several months ago. How many hurricanes does Florida get each year?

Felt it pretty good on the 12th floor of my office here in TO. Enough to make the glass of water on my desk vibrate. I understand the people downtown up in the 40th floor and above felt it even more. I guess the higher you go the greater the impact of the shifting effect. Would have been neat to be on the observation deck of the Tower at that time. That thing sways a good 6' in a stiff breeze!
I didn't realize there was so many quakes and good sized quakes up in the Canadian arctic. Interesting

Those maps make BC seem pretty brutal! all lit up.
I've been here for my entire life and can't remember noticing a single one though. (28 yrs) I guess cuz most of them look to be in the water. We are supposedly expecting "The Big One" anytime between now, and 50 years from now. The "experts" (says the media) suspect sooner than later despite previous predictions. Expected to be up in the 8+ range. It is thought by some that several local areas in the lower mainland.. greater vancouver area... will pretty much sink into the ocean if we do infact get "The Big One"... (Richmond & Downtown vancouver off the top of my head). Anyways, I'm glad that it sounds like the quake wasn't very damaging... hopefully nobody sustained any serious physical or even property damage for that matter. |

I still haven't heard of any injuries but a few buildings took heavy damage, and at least one bridge collapsed.

I was at work just a few miles west of downtown Ottawa and the sound was remarkable. Our 3 floor building was fully evaucated within 30 seconds at a full run down the stairs. When I returned to my office Thursday morning, some stuff had fallen off bookshelves, some ceiling tiles on the floors. My computer still turned on, it appears I was reading a post on Camaro5, LOL! Live on the 19th floor with a few of downtown Ottawa, only wall pictures were crooked. Have experienced quakes in California, I do have earthquake insurance, but most people here have never experienced a jolt like this as they are so rare.

I do not want to stray here but my friends Dads girl friend had that same thought. She thought the car was smart enough to know which fluids went where and poured them all into the gas tank, antifreeze, oil, trans fluid........
