How about total elimination of harmful opposition using the means to protect yourself provided by owning a gun?

What?

Listening to the 911 tape, I think he should have went out earlier, gotten the plate number off their getaway vehicle, confronted them so they would steal less property, and then if they ran he could have given the cops their plate. Then, perhaps, no weapon needed to be fired. Of course, this is why I don't have a shotgun for self defense, I have a handgun - I can disable an attacker with less chance of killing them. From the tape it sounds like he never tried to get them to leave without the possessions, but just walked out his door and shot them.

I'm sure they'd pull up in a legitimately registered and tagged vehicle to rob a house.

You are really positive of your aiming ability in a tense situation then.

If I have to pull the trigger on an intruder/attacker, first round is going to be center mass. The torso virtually always the biggest target. Easiest to acquire in a tense situation. Head shots are too tricky. Sometimes it looks like a through and through shot and all it has done is enter under the skin, travel around the outside of the skull, and exit on the other side.

But if you can calmly acquire and hit an attacker's kneecap in a hostile situation, while he is moving on spindly little crackhead legs, kudos to you.

Shotguns can be less lethal. rubber shot Stinger rounds had been approved for public sale last time I checked. I haven't actually bought any.

Maybe they'll make the beanbag round legal.

There's always 9 or 7 1/2 birdshot...but you might wanna' back that up with some 00 buck in case birdshot just pisses them off.

Load some shells with rocksalt? Man that would burn like a bitch!.
