He very well could have been an idiot. He was a Constable. Usually those guys are serving warrants not working traffic.

I have avoided talking about my recent stops because I have been lucky and feel guilty gloating. I have also used a simple thing called commmon sense. Regardless of the jurisdiction you must remain respectful and own your decision. No matter how much you may dislike a law or the person enforcing it you will not get far being a prick. From my experiences I have been doing something wrong each and every time. Cops can have bad days too, take the ticket without arguing and resolve it in court if you feel it was unjust. Let me say I am mainly referring to traffic laws. I am not an attorney nor do I wish to be one.

IMO one other thing that has been an asset for me is a concealed handgun license. I'm not starting the pro 2amend here I am just saying I think it has helped with the leo's initial impression. It at least shows them that at the time of the issuance I was not a felon. It don't say jack about being a leadfoot though!

Take a happy pill? I am quite happy, but thanks for the generic concern.

What about making sure the drivers out there have correct and factual information?

There are alot of young drivers out there and on C5 that for the most part get alot of their information on the web.

The reason I made my strenuous points is due to the fact the OP was from Canada and US law is very different...

But I guess I need a happy pill when immediate concern for correction need be made.

Sorry but you are wrong about one thing. Last time i was pulled over by a cop i was reached in my glove box to get my information before he got there. The officer immediately yelled at me to keep my hands on the steering wheel and went for his gun. I was instructed to wait for him to specifically ask me for my info, so he can make sure i was not reaching for a fire arm.

Also no matter how cooperative you are still it does not mean you are getting away free with no ticket. I would say 9 times out of 10 you are getting a ticket.

Unless he just pulled you over to check out your ride.

I've gotten two speeding tickets in my life, but been stopped much more often. I find the 'be respectful' thing will generally get you a warning most of the time so long as your speed wasn't excessive or you weren't clearly doing something stupid.

It's also my experience that 'probable cause' for a 'check you out' style pull over is easily manufactured. Especially by bored cops on lonely Arkansas highways at two a.m.

"I ran your plate, it came back as a stolen Buick Skylark. Clearly this isn't a Buick Skylark, but I needed to see your id."

"I saw you slowing down and checking out the store back there, what you up to tonight?"

Etc.

thats right, time and time again I have heard police officers say that when you get pulled over keep both hands in plain sight (on top of the steerring wheel), do not reach for anything like your wallet or into the glove compartment for your insurance card and registration until he requests it...
He cannot read your mind and too many officers have been shot making a traffic stop because someone pulled a gun out as he approached the car...
Respect them, they are there for your protection.

People are harping on fine points, to reinterate what I was saying about routine check is some laws apply to different states than others
if you want to argue about some of the points I've advised save your breath
in mynexperience that these tips are very valid and always use cautin when executing.

I am Canadian but my advise is helpful everywhere. I've also stated numerous times that if you live somewhere were just cause or reasonable grounds are required I "could" list a whole meriot of reasons or tricks police use.

Banshee was clarifying for his state specifically what's required

but as I said. This isn't about how your grttting pulled over it's about qhat to do whe. You get pulled over

A few people have said I am absolutely wrong when it comes to some of the tips I've posted. I am absolutely not wrong as there is no clear what to do list. These are just tips and every officer is different... That means some prefer you to sit there in stoneform but most.... At least in Ontario and Canada prefer what I've posted above

Last and finally. I am not American and yes laws are different. Ultiamtely respect and honesty go the farthest. Jus imagine it was you approaching the vehicle...

Asylum, Every thing you said in your initial post is exactly what we were told by the Ohio State Patrol to do when I took my concealed carry class. Granted it's different when a cop pulls you over and knows there is a chance you may have a loaded gun on you but the patrolman's exact words were if you want out of a ticket do this then stated the most of the points you hit on.

I've learned that "Yessirs" and "Nosirs" go very far to make it a smooth time, especially if your a YOUNG ADULT. I'm not one anymore but I still show respect.

I will take a butt chewing if I'm not getting a ticket, but I'm not taking a butt chewing and paying for a ticket too. I've told a Oklahoma Highway Patrol that before. He quit writing and started chewing and I just put my head down. Another one shut up smiled and kept writing. You win some and you lose some.

Bottom line RESPECT goes along ways, but it should go both ways too.
