If you swapped out the front bumper, you have a new Mazda6.

Because it's better to call it a luxury sedan than a sports sedan

It does kinda straddle the line between mainstream and entry level luxury. Impala does the same thing.

We have a 2010 Maxima that we bought brand new. It has been a great car. My wife still loves driving it. She's put 170k miles on it so far. We'll definitely check out the new one when it arrives at the dealerships.

An Infiniti G37 is a luxury sedan, and a BMW 750 is a luxury Sedan, just in different price ranges. The Maxima is your base price Luxury Sedan, while the other ones you mentioned are more of a mid range priced luxury sedan. Still a luxury sedan, just marketed at a more affordable price.

Not bad for a 4-door family car.
What does the base model Maxima look like though (wheel covers, cloth seats, etc)? 70% of the Maximas you'll see on the road will be the base/stripper cars. The base cars always look uglier than the higher trim models.
