I'd buy one loved my El Camino - the thing that killed the El Camino was not demand but it being classed as a car when the MPG requirements and emissions thing kicked in. I could see it coming back with it now being able to be classified as a SUV or CXV

Those Holden Utes are no joke. Z06 engine in a car that weighs less than the 5th Gen, and this was back in 2008. Sure, the import crowd will probably be the first to grab them up if they do come to the USA. We already have them, but not as Utes. They are Chevy Lumina CSV CR8 here in the Middle East and mid-sized sedans. We never had the US Lumina POS front-wheel drive. It all started with the Holden Monaro, which was brought over to the USA as the Pontiac G60 GTO for a few years, and then graduated to the front facade that you see with the Holden Ute. Can you see where the ZL1 front facade idea was taken from the CR8?

They run the Holden Commodore sedan, and the Ute chassis is technically a Commodore. The Australian Touring Car Series ended some time ago, and was replaced/merged with the Australian V8 Supercar Series. They run it in the Middle East in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and I think Qatar and Saudi Arabia, as well. I admire the cars.
I think if they were to bring the Ute to the USA and run it in the truck series, it would definitely be contested before it ever got on the track because of the definition of a truck. Could it be a crossover/hybrid? These are things well above my head, but I am fairly certain that if it were able to run in the series, it would mop the place up. By the way, Nissan is entering the Supercar series with a V8 RWD Altima for the 2013 series. I believe Mercedes may also be doing the same. I guess Toyota kicked started this whole thing with the Camry in NASCAR and other leagues are following suit. It's all fairly interesting. |

I remember the O'Brein (sp) racing team in San Antonio. They ran and won with El Caminos. He said they had great balance.

The Pontiac G8 'ute was initially planned to come here. But the economic melt down, poor GTO/G8 sales, and possibly the fact that insiders knew that Pontiac may be going away meant there was no business case for the investment to go through all the federal certifications.
One thought though, they made a case for the SSR, and that certainly was a low-volume specialized vehicle. |

That's a shame because the Commodore-based G8 was a beautiful sedan with plenty of power, and it lives on as the Commodore with the same style line/shape.
