The Instant my insurance company even suggests that to me I will be shopping for new insurance, they might as well hire a nanny to sit in the car and tell you how to drive.

Now look, I don't mind the black box for the purposes that so many advocates claim- finding out better ways of making cars safer, etc. But I strongly disagree with the way that private citizens are having their actions monitored all the time. It is, in the USA, expected that a private citizen can expect reasonable privacy.

This is why you have legal concerns over say wiretaps.

Now you might say "this is different". No. In concept it is not. if you think it is 'different', then go back to the drug dealing example and read it again. And don;t look at it as "I don't deal drugs". That's not the point. Look at it as "why should I be monitored if it's assumed I'm doing nothing wrong?"

People are routinely giving up their privacy in the name of 'safety' or some other thing that is on the surface OK. But if you for one second think that it ends with that 'good thing', then you are fooling yourself.

I don't get all bent out of shape over the box in my car, but it boils my blood when I hear somebody say "well if you're not doing anything wrong it doesn't matter". That's the same as "why protest if you've nothing to hide?".

I recommend that you start questioning why you feel it's OK to be monitored in the first place.
+ 1, good job , thanks.

We all have a GM Blackbox called OnStar that wants $$$ per month, depending upon your plan and how many times you say no.

The recorded data is stored before and after an air bag deployment. It's not easy to get. It would likely take a manufacturer to get the info and would require a warrant (court order) to obtain. It's not for fender benders. It's there for issues like vehicular homicide etc. Even then the cause of collision would probably be obvious and not require stored data.

Be prepared to give up your freedoms and liberties. Black box discussions is just the tip of the iceberg.
Seeing the poll so far not too many people are pleased with it. But, what can you do? Either buy an car before 1990 or tamper with it and deal with the problems head on.

Oh no I can only imagine the torture. She was right at that age were teen girls use one word constantly in conversation. The "like" syndrome at its peak. All of my nieces have that issue and I can't deal with it.

Those poor agents.

Wanting to keep other's out of your business and not allowing abuses of power is not political, it part our rights, regardless of politics.

Actually no. He is addressing the fact that a previous poster have no issues with being monitored because he says that he hasn't done anything wrong. It is on the same lines as having your property searched without a warranty. Just because it is in different degrees does not mean that the concept is not the same.

It's the insurance companies that are the driving force behind this. Not only could the info be used to hang you, it could be used to exonerate you of any wrongdoing... Since its already in 96% of new cars you are only talking about putting it in another 4%. I think any legislation should include the provision they have to have the owners permission to retrieve the data. Best thing to do is contact your congressmen and senators and let your concerns be known.
Silence is a vote of acceptance.

Well in CA, I believe you technically don't need insurance to drive as long as you have a $35k deposit made to the DMV. I don't think many people know that.

Second, last I heard most people around here don't drive with insurance anyways. I believe something in the range of 25% and above.
