I do live in California, where a large percentage of drivers don't even follow the rules, much less demonstrate any real driving ability. If they limited licenses only to people who can actually demonstrate competence behind the wheel, we'd solve a lot of our traffic problems.

Another question - states have no problem putting in cameras to catch speeders. Why don't they have cameras to catch people talking on their cellphone, taking care of/disciplining kids in the backseat, eating/drinking, etc. Speeding has become the scapegoat for the real problems that cause crashes.
+100 ... people with cellphones to their ear attempting to merge onto the interstate, crazy.

I always was taught the 2 second rule as a minimum. Make it 3 seconds or longer if in adverse conditions.

Not a bad start. Learn the rules now and then when you go in for your test you'll have no problems.

The safest distance you can travel behind another vehicle would be if that vehicle is stopped where it is, can you stop between where you are and where they are.

But it is always possible to travel that kind of distance because people who pass you and then come back in front of your car.

In the big trucks we teach five seconds.

That's what we did when I drove transit buses as well.
The 2 second rule works pretty well and if you add time for larger vehicles and adverse conditions then you are almost always good to go.

I got a 90%. If it counts for anything, I got a 100% on my written driver's test to get my license when I was 16.
