I think the highest you see for the base price is the ZL1 MSRP + the gas guzzler tax charge.

I agree with others here; Car and Driver doesn't exactly have a history of accurately predicting price. Of course, it's not an easy thing to do. You can get ballpark estimates on performance based on the car's equipment and weight, but with price you're guessing how much a guy in a suit thinks you'll be willing to pay for a car.

Even so, I can't honestly see that estimate being to far off. It's not THAT much higher than a ZL1, and I can already see Ford salesmen saying that the price difference is due to the higher performance.

A 45k dodge SRT8, comes with more standard features than is optional on a loaded 2SS, it is also quicker with better handling and falls beteen the most comparable SS (about 7k more expensive) and is 10k less than the ZL1. They don' think paying 45k for an SRT is comparable to a stripped down 1SS or base GT because there is no stripped down SRT8.

1. If the Shelby comes in at, around, or under the ZL1, and dominates, The Z will be a total blunder. IMO... Most of that could be attributed to all the smack talking AL O did about how the ZL1 would still smoke the 13 Shelby. Their simulations even proved it...

2. If the Shelby comes in higher than the Z, and the Shelby dominates, it wont matter cause you cant compare the two because of the price difference. This is why everyone wants it to be higher...

3. If the Shelby dominates in all area's, all tracks, even price, as long as there are no ring times posted for the Shelby showing it beat 7:41, the ZL1 is still king.

4. If the ZL1 dominates at any track, it is king because straight line numbers dont mean anything anymore and even if you get smoked at the strip/highway/street,(where 99.9% of all these cars will meet) its all about how fast you can take the off ramp.

5. If the ZL1 gets dominated by the Shelby in all areas, it wont matter because a magazine editor will say the Z was more comfortable and thats all that matters when buying a 580-670hp car.

Wow, you described the fans here to a T

The GT500 R&D has been going on since 2005. You can also make an argument that the ZL1 is just some new parts tacked on also, but that would be wrong as well.

I think you've missed the point. No need to defend the honor of the Challenger or try to slam the SS and 5.0 here. FWIW I like the Challenger. All I was saying is that Dodge felt it could price the SRT8 at $45K and be competitive with the SS and 5.0, which start at $31K. So Ford might feel like a GT500 priced at $60-70K is comparable to a ZL1 that's priced at $55K before GG tax. That's all.
