Shouldn't they be FOR stuff like this rather than against it? What's more environmentally friendly:

1. People driving CARB legal street cars to the track, putting in a different key and running non-CARB tuned, CATTED cars

2. People trailering race cars to the track on super-duty pickups, running at the track with no cats, etc.

Errrr. . .

That assumes California is run in a logical, rational manner. If it was, it wouldn't be the hot doo-doo pile it is today. I'm making plans to move to Texas or Virginia ASAP.

I think the easiest thing to do might be to just "sell" the TracKey through Ford Racing (I think you already have to pay for the key even if you get it from Ford) as opposed to including it with the car at delivery. I think then Ford wouldn't really need to bother with CARB. Either that or give up on CARB certification and let some Nevada Ford dealers get some extra business courtesy of CARB.

good point, very good point... But my best guess is that it's the paranoia of the CARB people that is killing this. They most likely believe that people will drive their cars on normal roads with the track key for everyday driving. Grant it, some people may do this, but still, paranoia over nothing really...

If they're that worried, ford could add some more features to the track key that would make it inconvenient to use the track key during normal driving, such as disabling the AC, radio, and cruise control. All of which have no place on the track... Sure people may complain about that, but I'd take that over not being able to get the key at all due to regulator paranoia.

I'd never get the car back if I gave my wife the "red" key, lol

Pish posh, didn't the Mian calendar run out in 2012 right after the Fest anyway? What's a little extra emissions between now and then?

Stupid! More gas lawnmowers are sold and used daily, farm machineries spewing pollution, pre-1974 cars exempt from emissions testing driving around daily with open cats, no smog devices, etc....and this state is worried about a limited # of cars with a "red" key that potentially could be used for daily driving. Ford hasn't paid off the right people is all. Kalifornia at its best.

You'd lose some money.
What does that have anything to do with the topic?

It's called the California Air Resources Board. CARB is a CALIFORNIA government agency, not federal. Other states CAN follow their regulations OR Federal regulations, but can not set their own legally because CARB was the only state-specific clean air regulative authority before the federal Clean Air Act was passed. It is California, not any other state. Other states have chosen to follow their regulations, but have ZERO say in CARB matters and ALL of the board members are appointed by the current California governor. Soooo, how is it not California again?

I think the problem is the manufacturer. Why even make a car with "off road use only" mode. Either make an emissions compliant car or make an offroad only car. Having a car that is both is a nightmare for emissions. I'm honestly not surprised at all.

I understand the history.
That's where I'm getting at, either do it one way or the other. Don't complicate things and screw yourself and your customers over.

The car works perfectly fine and performs quite impressively without the red key. The point of the red key is to offer the possibility of a balls out track car without it being completely illegal to drive on the street (meaning it MUST be trailered to the track, legally). What works for the street isn't typically what works for the track, so they built a car that can be docile and drivable on the street, but you can adjust the suspension, run the red key and tear up the track then switch back and drive it home. The funny thing is, the red key might still be emissions compliant, but it's still bad in Cali's eyes because it bumps emissions above 'stock' levels.

Ahhh vindication, when the first threads about this showed up here by the furd fan boys bragging, I said it would encounter all sorts of problems such as this.

Oh course it was written in stone so I was wrong then, dumbest idea ever by a carmaker.

[Just make it easy for folks to buy aftermarket computer tuners to change things.]

Biggest problem is it could been see as a nearly furd endorsed street racing deceive by some, since its not track limited by any action but the honesty of the drivers, and everyone knows you can’t trust a furd guy, easy fix is use the built in GPS devices as it could easily tell and disable the key if the car isn’t located inside a tracks location.

On top of that, the car could not even need a new key, just a button you push and the car auto tunes for the track you are at and current weather condition. [cheap cell phone GPS is accurate enough to know where you are.]

Wilkinda? you bought a new stang and moved to a camaro forum?
