I don’t think union workers deserve what they get. Today maybe with all the pay cuts. But, back in the day when they are making 30-50 dollars an hour for screwing on lug nuts, with a stool to sit on all day, not so much. No doubt that most are hard workers, but all the work rules jobs bank and all the other BS that goes along with unions is the reason I really despise them and yes I do despise them and for the record my best friend’s father is a union laborer and has been all his life.

I’m sorry if I’m ignorant for thinking people should have to work for something if they want it. Not just graduate High school join the UAW and picket when your ability to sit at home and slam down beers all day and still get 90 percent of your pay could be taken away.

I agree that a LOT of the crap unions do are absolutely stupid. Job bank is one of the dumbest concepts ever conceived, and I'm proud to say my dad was never in it.

However, a lot of the jobs in a GM assembly plant, or any auto manufacturing plant for that matter, deserve decent wages.

Another Norwood Assembly story...

One of my dad's jobs was to install catalytic converters into F-bodies. The first few times he did it, it wasn't so bad. But after installing hundreds of catalytic converters into hundreds of Camaros and Firebirds every day, his arms became so sore that he could barely move them.

By the end of my dad's 30-year tenure at GM, he was making around $27/hour. I'm not sure where you got the $30-$50/hour figure from, usually the only people who make wages like that either have a ton of seniority or are skilled trades. The average assembly line worker with 10-15 years under his or her belt doesn't make anything close.

Yeah KYLEPO is just full of himself. He likes to base his facts on his own belief. Or maybe a little man in his head told him so. He sounds crazy to me.

I have always heard more but I could be wrong. I still don’t think it’s right when a UAW worker can get so much when there are so many people that will work without all THE BS rules and the in my opinion unjustified pay. I mean I’m sorry your dad had sore arms that he could barley move them, but I mean what is expected working at a factory?

My dad would've been more than happy to work without the UAW, in fact, he probably would've liked it more.

Of course hard labor is expected from working at a factory. But earning decent wages is expected for hard work as well.

kylepo, I agree that a lot of GM employees probably don't deserve what they're paid. But believe me, work one month in a GM assembly plant, and you'll want decent wages too.

Another point, however, is that people who get paid more tend to be happier and work harder.

I worked in a factory making $12 an hour and I worked but I never killed myself. Now, I do rebar work and I make $24 an hour for regular time and $36 an hour for overtime, and I get a fair bit of overtime, and I work my ass off. My boss is an awesome guy and I am happy with my pay so I have no problem putting in extra effort.

GM Turns Down $3B Loan From Canada

Seems like some of you needed a reminder of the topic . . .

You'd think that after all the outcry about GM taking a loan from the US government, lots of you would be ecstatic that they won't take one from ours. At any rate, to me this is a very good sign that GM is in a better position than was thought a month ago. Alternatively, GM thinks that this loan would cost them more than not taking it would.

Yeah, on topic, I think its a good sign that GM has gone from 'PLEASE GIVE US MONEY RIGHT NOW!!" to ' Actually, you hang onto it."

Don't know how that can be seen as bad.

There is a ton of stereotyping and misinformation being thrown around in this thread.

As a result, this thread is dangerously close to being laid-off…

didnt think so.
We can't afford too. We dont have millions stuffed away in our bank accounts and plenty of stock options and bonuses coming out way to keep us afloat without working for the next 20 years.

I Don't get where alot of you seem to think that every GM UNION worker makes over $100,000 a year. It RARELY happens. My parents do, but my stepdad is a highly skilled tradesman, master electician for the entire west paint shop. My mother is a union rep for the entire west paint shop on her shift. Even them, they are both taxed very heavily.

My stepdad worked 7 days a week and almost no holidays most of the time. My mother is barely at home as she is working up to 16 hours a day at the plant. He has since retired last month and she is retiring next Dec.

As for me, the closest i came to making 100,000 was i banked close to 80 k when the GMT-900 came online and i worked any overtime and holidays and double/triple shifts i could.

Other then that, without overtime "thing of the past" we make about 65k a year give or take depending on your pay scale.

So we make the same as a toyota worker, ford worker, dodge and honda worker. Just wait until toyota's legacy costs finally catch up with them. Then we will see who changes their tune.

I agree that none of us UNION workers would take $1 salary, why would we, we dont have the money stuffed away like red ink rick. Our union have fought hard for us to get where we are today and i would be damned to let it all go in one shot because "everyone else is doing it".

I have a family to feed and house to pay and bills to pay, i can't do $1 salary. Can you in your job? i highly doubt it, so before you come across all nasty and start whipping us with words about taking a $1 salary, take a minute and think if YOU could do the same, then give me your answer.

The most my dad made a year was $90k. That was back in the good old days when GM was selling cars as fast as they could build them and Delphi was cranking out parts nonstop. Lot of overtime back then.
