I'm not LE or military, but I do shoot quite a bit.
There was discussion in the Firearms section regarding .223 penetration, it will likely go thru numerous interior partitions till it hits something more solid than drywall. That makes it pretty dangerous in a house entry. #7 buckshot is a good choice, but, like you point out, that's a lot of gun coming around a corner before you acquire a target. AR15 SBR would be better, but you're back to too much penetration. My go-to gun is the 1911, I've also been playing with a long barrel 10mm EAA, love the 14 rd capacity and nasty accurate well beyond 100 yds. 10mm probably gets back into too much penetration in a house, so, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

I can't say what I want to about keeping the threat alive or not... But I always shoot to eliminate the threat. And while they have a heart beat and a gun they are a threat.
We do have slings on our ARs and I've thought about that too. Although we went over having the AR people as point. I just don't really see why other than for long distance shots. In a place like Walmart I'm thinking an AR would work really well. In many places you have some really good sight lines where you can see across the store. We aren't issued anything other than our sidearm. If I want an AR in my trunk (no mounts anywhere inside) then I have to check one out at the start of my shift and return it at the end of shift. Kinda sucks... But I may start doing it. Even when it comes to a stand off I think I rather have the AR. Even though two years ago they had one and they guy who shot and killed the guy had only his glock. The guy with the AR never shot. But I'm thinking it was the lighting that screwed with that side of them.... The guy pulled out many objects trying to get shot before he pulled out the actual gun.

Also just general question... Shooting the same part of a person which round would be more effective in "disabling" the subject? An AR round or a .40 hollow point?

My opinion is that a sidearm should only be used while you get your rifle back online. If you're going in on an active shooter you should be just as well equipped if not more than the perp. Additionally with technique changes you should be coming around corners without too much gun. Take a few steps back and start pieing those corners and door ways. You shouldn't ever stick your rifle through door ways, out windows, or around corners. If you're worried about over penetration, perhaps consider frangible rounds.

I don't believe there is any good answer for that as every situation will be different. However, although the .223 is a small round it's velocity is very high. By design, the round typically tumbles when it hits tissue causing tearing and ripping. Additionally, you'll get more penetration and a better potential to defeat armor if the perp is wearing any. However, this is just my opinion. I'm no expert.

Why not go Short Barreled AR? Or AR Pistol?
You could in theory have a 20 round mag and a Pistol in a compact 20" total gun. You could have improved accuracy and velocity with the .223 round See the thread on AR15.com http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_122/2...Y_Thread_.html ![]()

Lots of interesting ideas here, but I am assuming the OP is working for a law enforcement agency and therefore has no choice in weapon style or ammo. Most issue the handgun and supply one type of long gun that can be carried.
For the OP, I know signing out the weapon each day may be a pain, but it won't seem so bad when the day comes that you need it.

No I'm a police officer. And I can either buy my own rifle which they have to approve of and I have to qualify on or use their AR15 or shotgun that I'm not fond of. Only 5 rounds and I just hate shooting them.
Issue is price when buying my own! I'm LE so I don't make much lol the house and Camaro take a good chunk of my pay.

Although being a shorter barrel isn't it going to have much greater of a recoil?

I'm having a hell of a time finding parts. All the parts I've seen lately are double these prices.
