On the other hand, Alabama just passed a new set of gun laws that went into effect on Aug 1. I don't have it in front of me, but it goes a little like this.

-We were already an open carry state and no one knew it, so now they have proclaimed that, and I believe a cop can be fined for trying to stop a law abiding citizen from practicing the right to open carry.

-Now officially legal to transport an unloaded handgun in a car without a concealed weapon permit as long as it is locked up, basically trunk or glove box.

-An employer before could ban you from keeping a gun in your car on their premises, they can still tell you not to bring it inside, but they cannot stop you from keeping it in your car.

-Went from a may issue state to a shall issue state, plus the sheriff has to provide a reason for denial and there is now an appeal process.

-You can get your permit for up to five years instead of just one year like before

Might be a little more off the top of my head, it's pretty awesome actually.

Training, eeek. I'm just kidding, but we don't have anything in Alabama, it was before our new law went into effect, and is just basically a background check. And it is done differently in each county. My buddy walked into Shelby County Sheriff's office(south of Birmingham area) and 20 minutes later walked out with a permit.

I live in Tuscaloosa, and it was all kinds of messed up. Took over a month and I had to meet with the University of Alabama police department. I tell you this much, the next time a government agency asks me if I'm a student, I'm not going to lie, I'm going to tell them it's none of their damn business. At 35 years old I don't make it a habit of asking permission for much anymore.

Springfield Armory® is initiating this voluntary safety recall to upgrade 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm and 3.3 XD-S™ .45ACP pistols with new components, which eliminate the possibility of a potentially dangerous condition. We want to emphasize that no injuries have been reported to date.

Springfield has determined that under exceptionally rare circumstances, some 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm and .45ACP caliber pistols could experience an unintended discharge during the loading process when the slide is released, or could experience a double-fire when the trigger is pulled once. The chance of these conditions existing is exceptionally rare, but if they happen, serious injury or death could occur.
Again, there have been no reports yet of this actually happening and this is a preventive measure to keep it that way.

Here is the model numbers that are effected.

This Safety Recall applies only to:
Springfield 3.3 XD-S™ 9mm pistols – serial numbers between XS900000 and XS938700
Springfield 3.3 XD-S™ .45ACP pistols – serial numbers between XS500000 and XS686300.

This Safety Recall does not apply to any XD® or XD(M)® pistols.

Gun talk - LE/military point of view

So after our training yesterday I really started to think about active shooter and building clearing. Right now we only have 5 people on my shift if everyone comes in (we are down two). In active shooter we aren't waiting for all 5 of us to go in. I'd get on scene and go in and may have someone on my tail but that's probably about it.

I'm thinking I'd prefer to use my handgun in a school or a house. In like Walmart I'd think AR would be nice if everyone was out of the way.
I like the 30 rounds in the AR and love shooting an AR but I don't like having that much gun in front of me. It gives away my position too quickly and gives them something to grab if the are waiting on the other side of the wall.

Then the argument of bullet types. Shot gun won't go through drywall but AR most likely will. Handgun rounds are made to mushroom out and cause as much damage as possible. Slugs just make a clean hole. Buckshot you have to make sure no one is around the threat before shooting.

With me it comes down to handgun or AR. I hate shooting shotgun and ours can only hold 5 rounds at a time and takes too long to reload.
The fact I can drop the AR and transition to my side arm for more ammo is about the only reason I'd consider carrying an AR.

Any more points of view??

Now if we are in an open area yea I want an AR!

I don't think any of that is actually necessary in any civilian environment, but if I were to play along, I'd go with medium range rifles in stores with a handgun holstered. For CQB, I like shotguns.

As for bullets, I'd rather keep the guy I shot alive but incapacitated for intelligence value.

Why not carry the AR in "team sling" or some other configuration? You could search with the handgun, but have the AR available should it be needed.
