Welcome, you can also open an on-line brokerage account at like E-Trade, Scottrade, or even BofA and they have a ton of free "how-to" courses, with a very small deposit that you are not forced to invest, just gets you account open, usually under $500 will get you an account.

Then you can take the course, what-if, and when you are ready dabble a little, 10 share of this, 10 of that and get a feel for it, just don't churn (buy/sell) too much or the trading fees will eat any profit you make.

I think I would have taken the 8,100 but I suspect that she needs enough to get in to her new car fast as I bet that is her only way to get around, so she likely can't sell until she can buy, unless she can sell for enough to buy, bad situation.

I have noticed the trading fees seem like they could kill ya if your buying and selling stocks left and right....

The trading fees suck, especially if you don't make much money off a sale.

Final comment on it, guess what I did with my years of investment experience 3 years ago now?

I sold darn near everything I had, bought treasuries and CD when they were still paying 5% and just parked my cash out of harms way. I could have held out for 6 months more and made a little more, but at 6 months and 3 days I would have been 20% down, at 9 months 40% down, I never try to time the market.

Only now am I wading in just a little, fun money investments, still too risky for my blood to put serious money in now. That said, if you play it right you can clean up, but the odds of that was right about with the lottery...
