I drove a 2006 Impala police car for three years and put about 140,000 miles on it as a highway patrol car. I was curious to see how this front wheel drive would hold up compared to the Crown Vics and Caprice I've driven in the past. The Impala handles realwell and does real good in bad weather because of the front wheel drive. My patrol car was loaded down with equipment and was within a couple hundred pounds of the maximum gross vehicle weight with just me in the car. On trips I could get 28 to 30 MPG and normal patrol around 18 to 22 MPG depending on idle time. The lowest mileage I ever got was about 13 MPG but that shift had a lot of idle time like working in construction zones. I feel the Impala is a more comfortable car than the crown Vic even though my impala had a cage (plexiglass between front and rear seats). My car had the 3.9L engine which was completely reliable. The car has close to 150,000 and still on patrol with another officer since I retired. Performance wise the Impala was pretty close in acceleration to the old 1995 caprice LT1 I drove and the Impala ha a higher speed limiter. The Impala is pretty close in performance to the Crown Vic but gets better fuel mileage. I've put a lot of miles on the older generation Impala with the 3.8 engine and I like the newer model Impala best. I think a lot of these qualities hold over to the civilian car. One draw back is there is limited floor space in the back seat and no room under either front seat for your feet because of the electric seats. If I hadn't bought my 1LT 10 Camaro I would have probably bought an Impala. You ought to be able to get 19 MPG gallon in town driving and 30 or more on the highway.
