I have been out of the recruiting realm for quite awhile.

Your best shot (honestly) is to do a dual application. And do it around the time of the next board selection.

That way- if you get picked up for Officer while still in the Delayed Enlistment program-- they will simply switch you over. If you don't get accepted go enlisted as an E3-- and after 1 year of service you can apply to be an officer--

It is MUCH easier to be selected to be an officer from the enlisted pool, compared to the civilian pool.

Good luck!

(Former USAF recruiter 2005-2008)
All this info is true....I was an AF recruiter for a tour as well.

I've been in for 10, and I'm currently an Avionics Tech at Joint base Lewis-Mcchord. I can tell you right now the air force is overmanned, (this is pretty common though, there is a cycle of over and undermanning) so you may have to fight a little harder to get to what you want. That said, i absolutely love it and you should go for it!

Maybe you need to go & talk to my husband who works as a Aircraft mech on the C17s over at McChord. alot of the time hes the only one that there that can do the work on the planes.

right now the Military is the only branch of the government that is laying off people

Its different for different AFSCs, mine (2A0X1S) is over manned, and our total Air Force end strength is over by like 5,000.

Retired after 24 years USAF/NY Air Guard, last job 8F000/ First Sergeant for the Aircraft Generation Squadron. Great Job. Been retired now 10 years and there is not a day that I miss it, even WITH the deployments and TDY's.

Talk with an OFFICER Recruiter and not just an NCO at the local Recruiting Station. Of course they will want to talk to you and get you to sign and ENLIST. Trust me, getting your COMMISSION will work out much better in the long run.

Good Luck to you and your quest!

What the paper minimums are and what you actually need to get selected are two different things.

I did 26 years in the Air Force. I retired last year as a MSgt. I still work for the AF as a civilian. I was a ComNav avionics tech and a B-52 Crew Chief. I would definitely recommend finishing your degree and getting a commision as an officer. There many fantastic job opportunities. Good luck

Airforce is the way to go. I did 6 years as a Fire Fighter. Got out and now i have a Federal fire fighting job making a ton of cash. Best thing i ever did. Its a pain in the ass cause you get treated like crap the first couple years. But get through that and its smooth sailing.

I say Airforce is the way to go cause they give you a job, and that IS your job. Army and Marines give you a job, but your primary is Infantry.....Cant really use Infantry in the real world as a career.

Alot of people bash on the Air force cause we would always stay in hotels and AC tents and got fed like kings. But i bet you if one day the Army said. "We are gonna start staying in hotels and eating lobster/steak" You wouldnt hear one guy saying....No we dont want that stuff! lol

If you do join the AF. Look into being a firefighter. VERY rewarding career. Everyone is always happy to see you when you come to their house to help.

I make alittle over 65K a year and its my first year out of the Airforce.....My pay will only go higher.

Edit: DO NOT listen to the recruiters.....Remember YOU are doing them a favor....not the other way around! Dont let them push you into somthing you dont want. If there is a job you want, DO NOT settle for somthing else.....They always have ways of getting you what you want.....and if they say they cant....walk away, i gaurantee they will be calling you in less then a week.

Aircraft Hydraulics has been critically undermanned for the entire 16 years I have been in. Overall end strength is higher than congress wants, but I assure you that (in maintenance anyway) the Air Force is not overmanned...

Go Air Force

I have to agree with lot of the group, I was in for four year's as enlisted, but It's so much better as an officer. After I got out I took full advantage of the G.I. bill and got a college degree. The Air Force was very rewarding and you meet a lot of great people.!!!!!

I did 14 years enlisted, it made me into something more then I could have ever thought.

Being an officer is a good idea, get your degree, go to OTS and roll. From what I've heard from some of my officer friends, it's not that bad. When you get to work, you'll realize the difference. Just remember that your NCO's are there to help you. The worst thing I ran into while I was in was an officer that didn't listen to his people and micro-managed.
