FOr just plain brute offroad capability:

any series Landcruiser- deisel or petrol
any series Nissan Patrol- deisel or petrol
Landrover Defender- very capable not as reliable
Unimog - not exactly in the suv class

those would be my top picks: lightweight, lots of torque, low gears, can fit on most trails, reliable

not the fastest nor flashiest but gets the job done and gets you home

IH Scout.

lol...Truthfully, they are underpowered. But out of all the old SUVs, I like the looks of it the best. My cousin restored one. Its a pretty clean looking car.

Depends what you are using the SUV for? Luxo sweetness on large budget? Escalade.
Luxo sweetness on a smaller budget? SRX
Off Road Capability? Tahoe
Off Road with people hauling? Suburban
Scooting around town on a small budget? Equinox/Terrain
Hardcore Off Road? Hummer H1/ H2 or Jeep Wrangler

Me preferably, i can't find anything with more tech and looks then the SRX! That's why i got one, plus it drives with the height of a truck, and the feel of a car!

Did you see the Jeremy Clarkson(from Top Gear) dvd (Clarkson - The Good, The Bad And The Ugly)? The were the off-road test between H2,Escalade and Range Rover, and Range rover beat them very easili.that was a total disaster for escalade.
As to me Tahoe is great one, but i think range rover ,will beat him at off-road test.

Tahoes really are great SUVs IMO (not very different than Escalades or Yukons, really...). Other than that, I do really think VW Touaregs, Hummer H3s, and Porsche Cayennes are great based on my test drive experiences.

I agree scouts are awsome little trucks, very tough. I agree alot of the older suvs were built for torque and not so much horsepower, they were slow but could tow 2 times their weight. you should post up pics of your cousins resto, i bet it looks sweet.

I really love my Trailblazer SS. Fast, reliable, comfortable, lots of space in the back for hauling stuff. Gas mileage sucks though. I'm going to sell it and buy an 86-89 Toyota 4Runner.
